MGU22H hardware specification and photos
MGU22H is the current head unit used in the 7 series. It is expected to be used on X5/X7 starting from August 2023 production.
External photos: https://fcc.report/FCC-ID/T8GMGU22H/5770732.pdf Internal photos: https://fcc.report/FCC-ID/T8GMGU22H/5768501.pdf SoC closeup is attached. VERY big hardware upgrade compared to MGU21. I will only be describing the major changes: MGU21 uses Intel Atom x7-A3960 and Intel HD Graphics 505
MGU22H uses Snapdragon SA8155P with 2x8GB Micron LPDDR4 RAM. The processor is pretty much an automobile version of Snapdragon 855. It has 8 GPU cores and an Adreno 640 GPU, including:
Adreno 640 blows the GPU used in MGU21 out of the water, producing a massive (relatively speaking) 954.7 GFLOPS. For comparison, the GPU used in Xbox One produces 1300 GFLOPS. What does this mean for all of us? 1) 99.99% certain that cars using MGU21 will not receive the iDrive 8.5 update due to the significant change in hardware specification. 2) Snapdragon SA8155P is compatible with Android, so slim chance that we might receive an update to iDrive 9 in the future. 3) X5/X7 in April production get a head unit called MGU21A. Hardware specs are currently unknown. At this stage, order at your own risk of being unsupported later on down the track. Last edited by coolcat0304; 04-16-2023 at 06:05 AM.. Reason: typo |

Check out this thread over with the X7s - some translated content on this topic coming out of German FAQs. End of page 36 and early 37 on Mobil.

Some ppl said that the x5 production in July will receive this but it's actually April? Is the head unit hot swappable to the updated version if you get stuck with the 21a.

A new head unit will be used for July/August production. Will most likely be hot swappable if the Service Packs remain the same. Whether you want to fork out around $5000 USD just for the part alone is up to you.

Just for clarity, an interim new head unit (MGU21A aka MGU4+) was also used starting with April production.

coolcat0304 figured i would toss this in here too because of all the different threads accross bimmerpost on ID8 ( and saw you posted in the x7 section)
Jan build 2023 x7 has MGU22H so seems like BMW has filtered the most capable headunit out sooner than some originally thought |

That Qualcomm Chip has Vulnerabilities in SA8155P https://www.cybersecurity-help.cz/vdb/qualcomm/sa8155p/ Looks like they have patch them as the last update was May 2023. I do not know how BMW deals with cyber attacks and how they would apply patches. |

BMW now states that "quick closure of possible safety gaps in the software" is possible through Remote Software Update. I'd imagine that is how BMW will deliver most fixes to their customers (combined with backend fixes for ConnectedDrive). |

So, I had nothing better to do on a Saturday morning and ended up digging thru all FCC filings, Qualcomm data sheets and reference schematics to make a sense of this. There are a lot of threads discussing this but I’ll post my investigation here. Only posting head unit technical information, not sure what’s going on with ID8.5.
I have a 4/23 built X6 40i with MGU22/MGU22H head unit, based on the regulatory information from iDrive. People saying that what iDrive says doesn’t matter are wrong, thats not how FCC filing/approvals work. BMW has to get approval based on what hardware is in the car, not based on what software is running. This cannot be changed with OTA since the hardware cannot change. They list both, MGU22 and MGU22H because they’re almost identical in HW (except, see below). MGU22
So they should be interchangeable, but I’m not too sure about the lack of 1 gig Ethernet port and 1 missing USB on the MGU22H. Maybe they thought they’ll use it for something and later didn’t so they removed it from 22H. MGU21/MGUFA/MGUFQ All of these use the really old Intel Atom A3960 platform and other hardware is similar between them. MGU21A Like others have said, there’s not a lot of information on this. The FCC filings are very recentl and they’ve requested secrecy from FCC for up to 180 days. Hopefully the photos show up soon. But going by number schems, doesn’t seem like it will have Qualcomm SoC. ICD23/23H Again, similar to MGU, they’re identical in hardware. ICD23 made by Garmin and 23H made by Harman. One interesting thing is that even though ICD is still based on SA8155, they’re not using Qualcomm WiFi/BT, LTE or GNSS solutions. Instead, they’re going with NXP 88Q9098 for WiFi 6 and BT 5.3 and UBlox UBX-M8030 GNSS which supposedly has better urban canyon performance. To summarize - all newer units which are running Qualcomm SA8155 chipset (almost reference design HW) are more than capable of running ID8, 8.5, 9 and whatever the hell you throw at it. Whether they get software upgrades or not is another story, but it sure isn’t a hardware limitation. |
