Just placed an order for a 2020 X5 40i Msport after giving up on my GLE450 due to production delays. This was a difficult decision as I really like the new GLE coming out but Mercedes stuffed up the rollout of this revamped vehicle. As such I moved to the dark side and will go with a X5.

Earlier this week I went to my local dealer expecting to negotiate the final selling price and put down a deposit as part of the custom ordering process. I see numerous postings here stating they ordered a 2020 X5 at various %’s off MSRP. In my case my local dealer customized my build and put it in the system but no deposit was given nor a final sales price agreed. Once the vehicle arrives the final negotiations will take place and all paperwork will be signed.

What is the norm in the “BMW world”? Are all these postings about x% off msrp just “handshake deals” that will be finalized once the 2020 vehicle arrives?

I will be ordering my X5 soon and will insist on a finalized deal targeting 8% or better off MSRP. I intend to submit my offer to four dealers and whomever meets MY deal wins! I would be suspicious of what your dealer is doing. He may hope you love the new car when you see it and that he can talk you into a low %off MSRP.
I am in Florida on the west coast? Where is your dealer?

Typically the car isn't "bought" until you pick it up from the dealer - so placing an order puts you at zero risk - especially since you didn't put a deposit down. I suppose you can negotiate the sale price once the car arrives but that puts you at an emotional disadvantage because a) you've been waiting X amount of weeks for the car to arrive, so you're probably eager
b) you'll see this shiny new toy right in front of you with fear of it "selling fast" if you don't take their deal.

If it were me, strategically speaking, I would negotiate the price before putting the order in. Makes it a lot easier to walk away if you're not getting a deal you feel is fair.

Jacksonville. I’m willing to shop around if my local dealer isn’t reasonable once the ordered vehicle arrives. Where on the west coast are you?

I agree with your comments and believe that might be part of their strategy. Total wait time will only be 2-3 weeks so I won’t have much emotional investment in this vehicle. If the dealer isn’t reasonable I will order another vehicle from another dealer with a signed contract beforehand. Worse case scenario is my local dealer isn t reasonable so I wait for the GLE450 to arrive. It’s really a no loss position.

I am in the Tampa/ St Petersburg area and am targeting four dealers within 45 miles; one of which is in Sarasota. My build is $86455 and I currently own a2017 Maserati, so my deal has two parts, first % off MSRP, and when that is met then I have a $ figure of what my Mas is worth as a trade in based on several trade in web sites , like KBB, Edmonds, etc. If it doesn’t work out then I’m happy to keep my Mas.

I'm in Jacksonville, too. Given what I read about pricing in many other areas of the country, our local dealer pricing isn't even close to reasonable.

The sales personnel are fine. They are friendly and professional, but the dealership pricing policies are just not competitive.

I tried one last time to make a deal on an X5 this week (on the last day of the month) and the deal was absolutely ridiculous.

No it's not a handshake deal. It's a written down deal which they will absolutely honor.

Same for me this weekend. Dealer had 5 allocations x5m50i and placed an order with my specific build. Production is 3rd week of September due to full leather ordered. Zero deposit when another dealer was asking for $5k deposit. We agreed to Costco discount $2k over invoice and 1500 loyalty/usaa.

My Norm is negotiate your best deal off MSRP get it in writing and leave $1,000 deposit. I worked with 3 dealers in north central Florida and got a purchase order sheet listing my price 5.7% off MSRP exactly what I'm paying at delivery.

Have 3 exact builds in production status that dealers built as Sold during negotiations 2 are going to dealers inventory.

First time BMW buyer - need advice!

Newbie here, purchasing my first BMW (been an Audi guy for a while). Just starting the quote process for a new build, X540i (buy not lease). $76,500 is the build MSRP. Local dealer offering $2K off (2.6%). After just a few minutes of reading here it's clear that's a terrible deal!

Would appreciate any advice here (or PM) on dealerships on the East coast I could shop for good deals.

Thanks!

PS - what an amazing forum and community here!

I might give Carvana a try. One concern is I would have to pay tax on the full purchase price instead of the difference of trade and purchase. Does Carvana beat KBB and Edmund’s trade in estimates?

You may want to also try Vroom and Carmax. Both have given decent valuations at times.

There is lots of competition in DC/MD/VA area and I guess the same in PC/CT/NY/NJ area. Email multiple of them and ask for 10% off. You can get close to that with custom order.

yes, Carvana beat them both so try them all, Carmax sucks imo, see what your best deal minus the tax savings simple math.
Let us know how you did.

I tried Carvana for my 2017 Maserati and was offered $38994. Comparing this offer against trade in doesn’t look good unless I am way off of what I think I can get for trade. Based on KBB, Edmunds, and another site I can’t remember the trade in range was a low of $37500 to a high of $48750. In Florida the tax rate is 6%, so using the Carvana figure the tax saving on trade is $2339; therefore a dealer would have to offer me $36,655 to equal the Carvana offer. I think I can do much better on trade in value than $36655. Worst case, if the four dealers all low ball me and offer me less than $36655, then Carvana will win. Make sense?

It's a great option, my 12 SRX w 43k miles was appraised at 14k so it's a no-brainer for me with Florida 6% sales tax saving of $800 minus 200 Tag only $600 more for me to sell vice trade. I would get a estimate from Dealer before delivery to see where you're at.

btw I was considering the Levante glad you're getting the X5

It's a pretty good deal for a custom 2020 build. You could push for a 0.1 to 0.8% more but if it took a lot to get to 9.2 might not be worth the hassle.

Hopefully it arrives yours arrive in Sept and that there's more incentives than a very bleak August.
