N63 Tear Down

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
If this hasn't been posted, yeah, not an S63, but still interesting!

As we know, some of the differences between the N & S are:

• Engine tune (X5M +77 hp, +0 tq; winds +1k rpm -- CP +17hp)
• Transmission tune (X5M adds 4wd "sport" mode & slightly faster shifting)
• X5M adds different piston crown for better cooling
• X5M adds additional engine/transmission oil cooler
• X5M adds 2nd oil sump, completely different oil cooling
• X5M adds different engine & transmission mounts

This is probably the first N64 with "only" 400hp/440tq. Both the N63 and S63 have gone through many revisions. Nevertheless, amazing video, these engines are absolute awful to maintain and work on.

Yup, exactly - still pretty interesting to see - in general - what's in our engines ... but damn, that chain guide looks like a bad idea and to think that one choice of plastic took out the entire engine? Geezus, what a tragedy.

The leaky oil in the V also seems scary ...

Anyway, it's a good scared straight video for modding for me

A few hrs of content here on the s63- not sure if all the differences in parts are a gen 1 vs 2 or n vs s or a little bit of both.

Revised or not, these engines are a total nightmare to work on. They are great performing engines when they are new, but once they get older the maintenance on them is very expensive.

Interesting about chain guides. Our 328i F90 spent 2.5 weeks at BMW of Manhattan having the front end of the engine taken off to replace guides as part of a service bulletin. They had a a similar caramel plastic color so wonder if it was the same material. Maybe an example where trying to save a few cents cost them big in warranty repairs.

Some engineering (or finance) manager saved $50M in year one, then got promoted over it, then left BMW for a new & better role at a competitor ...

Then the warranty claims started coming in ...

Here is the article for the video for a bit more reference to that tear down. It is thee older model done in an educated way to show what issues plagued N63 early days.

Great share btw!

Not sure if everyone can view that or not?

Here is another good run down on the differences. The original N63 and the recent updates are quite different. They still have the hot Vee but better shielding, larger inter cooler, and the engine will run to cool it off. That being said there are issues. I would never run it really hot and ragged then just turn it off and leave it. Best to ride at a smooth pace before ending the day. I do love flogging on my rides though.

Which trim and model effects it too. The M50i engine is the "Top" performance in the N63 base with the obvious plus up being the change to the S S63 which is further upgraded. The Base N62 in the original 50i line is a M or a B based on year it was produced.

Funny because I always do this and honestly never even thought about why ... on my M4 ~10k of 14k miles are driven in anger and, of those, about 4k are "cool down" miles on hwy 1

I live 5 miles from the freeway and the last mile is 25mph in my gated community. So a forced cool down period!

I'm onto my 3rd N63/S63 X5, as the oil burning is real. Haven't had a issue with the S63Tu4 in the F95 comp yet.

No cool down in my gated community, as the garage is where the beast cools down.

I just traded in my 2009 X6 xdrive 50i. I had it almost 13 years with 78K on the odometer. The only problem I had was the last 2-3 years I had to feed it oil every other month. Other than that, I had no issues. I don't know because it only had 78K miles or if we just didn't drive it very hard. After reading all the reports, I'm a little worried, especially because I traded my X6 in for a X5 M50i. Basically the same motor. I'm hoping BMW figured out the problem and I was going to ask the crew, would it help with cooling if when I returned from a trip if I opened the hood to help with the cooling, or would that not do anything?

The additional oil coolers for the S63 run upwards of 10 min when I park based on the RPM's/drive logic setting prior to parking (based on my 18 F85 and 21 F95). The N63 in your G05 doesn't have the additional oil coolers. I highly doubt opening the hood would do anything. Last fall I hit the tail of the dragon hard and needed a top off of oil the following day, but that was in my retired F85. Maybe the current G05/F95 N63/S63 has this issue resolved being on the Tu4, as the V8 oil burn has been a know issue for almost 10 years.

Thanks. I didn't think it would. But I figured I would ask someone who is smarter than me when it comes to engines

It actually would help the heat escape the hot V area. I've even seen people talk about removing the hood padding etc to help dissipate heat but I would not do that in fear of damaging the already cheap BMW paint. Adding a fan in the garage would also help even more down low to help push the hot air up and out. However all overkill perhaps depends on your during habits. Nonetheless every little bit helps.

The M50i has the extra turbo oil cooler that will run up to 15 mins after the engine is off and the larger inter cooler. The N63T in the M50i has all the S63 cooling addons it is detuned, smaller turbo package and several smaller changes.

It will cool off after running and the newest N63 is very different than the original 09 models.

BMW N63B44T3 - N63TU3 Technical Update 3

N63B44T3 Horsepower: 523 hp (390kW)

N63B44T3 Torque: 553 lb-ft (750 N-m)

Years: 2018-present

The top tier version of the N63TU3 is quite impressive. It produces a staggering 523 horsepower and 553 torque. Notice, this is the same torque output as the impressive S63 M engines. Updates are similar to the middle output version. Although, the upper output version gets some stronger, beefier components to support the power. Updates include:

**Also includes above TU3 updates, but we do not mention them here to avoid duplicates

Electric arc wire sprayed cylinder walls
Piston skirt coating
Crankshaft re-balanced with new main bearing shells
Forged rods from S63TU4
Larger turbochargers with electrical blow-off valves
Updated ignition system, taken from modular B series engines
The top power N63TU3 receives a few extra updates over the middle output version. Cylinder walls receive arc spraying for strength and durability. Pistons are coated to accommodate the cylinder walls update. The crankshaft is lightened and strengthened. N63TU3 forged rods are carried over from the 591 horsepower S63TU4. Larger turbochargers are responsible for the significant increase in power and torque. Finally, the ignition system is updated to support the new found power.

As evidenced, this update is almost all to do with power. New, larger turbos produce impressive numbers. The N63TU3 is mod happy and is a strong engine designed to handle the power and torque. Excellent update and beautiful engine.

BMW N63 Final Thoughts

From one of the least reliable BMW engines to one of the most underrated BMW engines. BMW experienced early issues with the original N63. Fortunately, customer care packages dampen the troubles. Furthermore, issues were resolved with the release of the N63TU. This engine was basically a complete re-design of the N63. The N63TU2 takes another step forward with the change to efficient twin-scroll turbos.

This makes me feel so much better. Thank you for taking the time to explain the changes this great engine has gone through!

Awesome video, thanks for sharing that. Crumbly timing chain guides are thing on German motors and it's a shame because there are so many wonderful bits of engineering that could soldier on for years to come but are held back by this shit plastic.
