I was about to pull the trigger on this amazon piece but I’m way too anal about the details and the X not lighting up would’ve drove me crazy. So just got the whole damn thing together will the radio panel. Should be here next week.

On the aftermarket units, or mine at least: The X lights up, but does not change between white/amber. The P does not illuminate.

Actually, I just looked at things again and the P *does* illuminate. So it's just the X remaining white at all times.

please post pics of your crystal shifter illuminated in comparison to what the factory crystal shifter looks like illuminated.

I'm strongly considering getting this mod but want to know what I'm in for.

The videos have him working on the front of the gear shifter - was it hard to access and unscrew that with the rest of the unit still installed in the car?

No the shifter is an easy install. There is room to unscrew and install, no problem.

I made the mistake and didn't disconnect the battery when changing the gear shifter and now car is stuck. I'm looking for the center console part but no luck.... wish I just disconnected the battery!!!

Did you happen to get the part that you need to get your car going again?

Put all originals back and towed it to dealership. It was the console piece that got fried if you don't disconnect the battery.

Also when you change the idrive controller you need to disconnect the battery.

But please disconnect the battery. I’m still pissed at myself for not doing that.
I don't understand why you would need to disconnect the battery ... just disconnect the iDrive controller wire harness and then work on the knob? Is there a reason this wont work? Still waiting on my G05 to be built ... so genuinely curious.

Got a chance to install my crystal parts.

Ran into a bit of a snag, while installing the Idrive Controller, I broke a small piece of the cable locking bracket. Luckily, I was still able to get the cable in and secured.

I took note from here and ensured I disconnected the negatives to both batteries!

Before and After.

Looking to get the vol knob replaced soon.

Bought an X5 for my wife for Christmas, picked up these parts from car-analysis. Do you need to disconnect the front and rear batteries in order to install these? The front seems exceedingly difficult to disconnect unless I'm missing something obvious

Edit: I'm going to say covid has rotted my brain out because this was actually quite simple. I have no idea what I was thinking but I was trying to use a regular wrench instead of a socket

Yeah I was trying to think why was it so difficult for you. Glad you've figured it out! You definitely want to disconnect the batteries PRIOR TO install.

To chime in for others who ask this, yes. yes yes yes, yes. Disconnect your batteries. It takes a few minutes and the peace of mind is worth it, unless you're a fan of the "you've really done it now George" sound the car makes.

Does anyone know how to remove the idrive controller knob module? I made the mistake of damaging the ribbon cable underneath the glass fascia during install. Couldn't find the flat ribbon cable anywhere, so I bought a whole new module. When I accessed the bottom of the defective module, I unscrewed 4 torx screws and for the life of me could not pry it off without thinking I will damage surrounding pieces. Is there a special pry tool to use for this?
