We ordered 45e and was delivered with "touchless" screen. My wife did not want it so we ended up picking a regular X5 from the lot. My local dealer in MD had 4 X5s with touch screen.

FWIW BMW makes some of the most responsive touchscreens in the industry. I am impressed. |

Wouldn't most enthusiasts be looking for new cars with the latest stuff versus used buyers who, due to their very nature, are willing to make compromises? Just seems like anyone willing to buy a 3 or 5 or 7 year old vehicle has already decided they don't need the latest tech ... so is a touchscreen really gonna be a dealbreaker? For example, anyone buying a 3 year old X5 today already isn't getting backup assistant and might not be getting iDrive 7 (don't remember when they changed). My 2018 M4 Comp doesn't have a touchscreen, but do enthusiasts really care? Anyway, I definitely agree anyone well-informed & detail-oriented will likely do as you say, but I'd also say that's a niche-of-niche-of-niche buyer ... and, broadly, touchscreens won't have any re-sale impact since prices are generally set by auctions which ignore options, and ultimately those prices flow to Kelley Blue Book, etc, and high-volume used car retailers (driveway, etc), as well as dealerships ... So while 1 buyer out of 1000 might avoid the 2022s, that still leaves 999 buyers who'll just be glad to get a BMW X5

My answer is, both seem to be a component at the end of a designed, engineered chain that require software. Seems like the replacement, as least as we've seen articulated here, wouldn't be much: extract the old, plug in the new, update the software. Thus factoring out the replacement effort, seems like the only difference would be BMWNA doesn't want to pay for 2 screens per vehicle (1 no touch, 1 touch) since the old non-touch screens would probably be worthless. No doubt BMW accountants are saying "but the non-touch screen is still a screen! It's 98% of what's promised and, looking at the data, most people aren't using it anyway!" From a business point of view that's absolutely the right call ... From a customer & PR point of view, for a luxury product that solves a specific problem in it's customer's lives, it seems extraordinarily stupid.

Oh, I see. Sorry about your loss. Have you tried to convince buyers that no roof = less weight?

lol, no, but I will say 80%ish of the miles on that car were driven in anger on road courses and for my money (literally) if you wanna sport drive in California: * Top down = sound + smells: rubber, oil, & in Cali, wild sage & pine; I'll likely never buy a car for the track again as, for me, the experience is much less ... though I'll rent them for, say, the 'ring or whatever * Top down anger driving with a heavy roof in the booty is fun as hell; completely ridiculous on a track but on a road course hairpin hangin that ass out is majestic There doesn't seem to be many better places to drive on Earth than the Santa Cruz mountains ... Back on topic, that 2018 has no touchscreen & no iDrive7 ... that sure doesn't mean nobody should care, especially in an X5, but I think it does mean that, broadly, 99% of prospective used buyers won't care and certainly used car flippers won't. |
