Have you considered coming over to the dark side of the M50i? It's a lot more fun in this side

With the instant torque of the electric motor and the combined power of the ICE and electric, the 45e is no slouch in that it feels faster than it is. Now, maybe if I was towing a big trailer with a family and luggage, more power might be useful, but doing that usually means you aren't trying to be the fastest one on the road, either. In the meantime, that V8 would be more expensive to buy, more expensive to maintain (if you keep it out of warranty), and much more expensive to feed fuel to.
It all depends on what you want, and what your priorities are. For me, the 45e hit a sweet spot. Now, give it a few years, I might change my mind, but I doubt it. |

I really love the idea of the hybrid, but with my two commutes (52 miles round trip 4 days a week and 160 miles round trip 2 days per week) I will be driving about 25K miles per year with 90% being highway. The engine of the 40i is getting me about 27mpg on the highway currently. This is actually the first time I have calculated out the numbers....I don't think the hybrid would end up being very efficient for me right now. As soon as I leave the Air Force and move closer to my job, the hybrid would be perfect |

Question: What does the car with an "e" in blue mean (X5 45e)?
To any X5 45e owners, what does the icon with an e on the car and mileage mean in live cockpit professional? Thank you in advance!

Thanks for all the info everyone. It's been very helpful. One last question for all the 45E owners. On longer trips when the battery ultimately says it is depleted, how does the car feel to drive? Is acceleration that much slower? Or is there always a little bit of electric juice in the battery to help you with acceleration? I don't really care as much about miles per gallon on longer trips as long as it is around the EPA estimate of 22 or so. Frankly I just don't want it to feel like a slug when the battery is depleted. I'm not out to win any drag races but I do want to still feel like a BMW

The question that i have is why do you guys buy 45e in the first place?
-Not enough money (like buying M50i instead of M despite some voices worrying about firmness of M50i) ? BTW, it’s me...i’m going with M50i. -Gas price (you already spent $80k), so what’s the yearly diff between big-ass engine consumption and that one? -If money is not the issue, because of its “hybridness” and eco-friendliness? Something else? |

No carpool lane restrictions in California until 2025 (can drive in carpool lanes solo).
Subsidies for purchase of both vehicle and charging infrastructure. EV torque in conjunction with ICE is close to V8 Smooth/silent operation when desired. Driving around in EV mode is very relaxing. $4.50/gal in San Francisco adds up. 45e gets over 3x the milage when driving in the city - particularly with all of the hills, stop/go, etc. Last edited by Fennario; 04-01-2021 at 03:41 PM.. |

Well the 45E is cheaper than the 40i after tax incentives. Has standard air suspension. And while I don't live in a city, my gas bill will be cut in half if I buy one. And acceleration is just as good if not better than the 40i. My question is why wouldn't you buy one? (If the other choice is a 40i And you had a place to charge it every night). I saw one member has put more than 2000 miles on his car and has never filled it up with gas

I got it. Its the money. Ultimately.
Im in the same boat. Nothing new. It takes coal and gas to move the electrons. Plus a bit more regen efficiency and less torque. LOL |

Torque on BMW engines is available at fairly low RPMs, but the electric motor produces maximum torque at zero, augmenting the ICE when necessary. If you're worried about getting to zero on the batteries, you CAN set the controls to maintain some higher level of battery charge, so are then certain you'll always have max EV boost...unless, you're on the track. During any cruise, there's probably at least 200Hp available to charge the batteries that isn't needed to maintain speed. And, there's almost always some EV power to help back up the ICE. Running around town in EV mode is quiet, smooth, and unless you always need to be the first one across the intersection, has plenty of power. While I don't begrudge anyone driving what they want (as long as it's not belching noxious chemicals including soot and smoke), I am, so far, more than satisfied with my PHEV. Yes, I could have afforded an M, but saw no good reason to do it...one reason why I could afford it is being a bit practical so I can spend it on other things, like flying, traveling, neat other toys I can use more often, etc. If it floats your boat, fine. They make different models because not everyone's needs and desires are the same. Diversity is good, just keep in mind, not everyone likes the same things and we'll all get along better! |

Time is the most valuable commodity of them all... Doesn't really matter how much hp/torque the car next to me has when they are stuck in bumper-to-bumper and I am flying past in the HOV lane with an EV sticker on the 45e.

Each of the X5 models sold in the USA can easily vastly exceed the legal speed limits, and likely do that while climbing up a mountain pass. IN most driving situations, any of the X5's sold can easily keep up.
Yes, the thrill of acceleration is worth something...more to some than others. Live with it. Some love the sound of the engine...personally, once in awhile, it is neat, but I'd rather it be quiet! Higher noise levels are a known stress inducer. Try a cross-country flight with and without noise cancelling headphones, and you'll find you arrive much more relaxed with them than without. For a short stretch, it's neat. On a long ride, quiet is more important. |

2. Better comfort compared to my Tesla Model 3 LR with 19" wheels (45e has air suspension) 3. Federal EV incentive plus CA Clean Fuel incentive adds up to $9k "discount" on top of the other incentives and dealer discount. 4. Have solar panels so technically "free" charging together with my current JuiceBox Pro Having a "fast" car was at the bottom of my list, as if I just want a fast car I don't/won't need to upgrade from the 3.7sh 0-60 that I get from my Tesla Model 3 |
