Both Keys don't work on new car...!

I've had my 45e now since April. I've used the same key for the whole time. The other key has stayed in the kitchen drawer. But today when I went out to start my car, I noticed the car didn't recognize me when I approached. No worries - unlock the car, sit in the car to press start - and I get a message saying the key is missing. Then I started getting a message to place the key next to the steering column. I tried that as well. Then I go to get the other key. Same exact thing. It will unlock/lock the car, but will not start it.
However, I did use the key card to unlock and start the car so I could go to the store. I looked in the manual which says to place the key next to the steering column and to repeat the procedure until it works. Ugh ,after an hour of trying I gave up. Oh, and I changed the batteries as well just in case. no luck
I did a google search and didn't see anything like it. It's 10pm here on the west coast so no one to call. I'll call the local BMW dealer in the morning. Ughhhhhhhhh - brand new car! Oh... btw, I did the sw upgrade last week, Hmmmmmmmmmm?

After the software update, did you use the car and it worked fine or is this the first time you are using it since the update?

disconnect the car's battery and reconnect it again:

1. With all doors closed, press the START-STOP button 3 times within 4 seconds.
2. Press center lock button and hold.
3. Press Start/Stop button.
4. Release Start/Stop button.
5. Release center lock button.

interesting - I'll try it. When you say center lock - you mean the door lock button on driver's side ?

My guess would rather be a round BMW button on your key fob.

Ahhh.... I get it - center lock on the remote. I've scheduled a service center call. I'm going to drive to the service center and show them this and do at the place I bought it. I should be able to start the car again w/ the key card.

I didn't do the fix from nZtiZia I was afraid to brick the car in my driveway. I got it to start w/ the card down to the place I bought it. Service guys have no idea. The keys work to lock/unlock car, key card works same but also starts the car. They have the car now - said probably will take days to figure out the cause. I asked them can't they just "marry" the keys back to car? They said no since the keys are already assigned to the car and programmed.
My sales guy was there - and he said another X5 he sold - the guy told him after he did the SW update, same thing happened to him later that day.

I'm going to put another thread warning about possible issues with the SW update to look out for.

I recently got the missing key message and wondered why. I updated (I think) two weeks or so ago. I hope this is one isolated issue. Hope you'll get it resolved. And yes, I'm not comfortable doing all those nZtiZia suggested. Heck I don't even know where the battery is. I read somewhere here that it's hidden somewhere.

There are batteries in the engine bay at the passenger side firewall (LHD) and drivers side under the cargo tray and trim. Hopefully he can chime in as to which battery to disconnect.

The main (starter) battery is below the rear cargo floor. See G1 in the pic below. But there could be up to 5 other aux batteries depending on how the vehicle is optioned:

With the way things are, I would think it's easy to fix and this is how to fix. However, I'd like to know why? Why did it happen?

The message came up twice that day because I had to get out and got back in. Not sure if it was the sensor being too sensitive. Engine was still running.

thanks - we tried deleting the key card - it wouldn't let us. The dealer has it now. It's totally under warranty, so they run the show. They said they'll have it a few days.

yeah me too. It's weird. the dealer said they've never seen it. They said they've seen issues w/ the key card and keys confusing each other, like keep one outside the car. But not like this. It's more confusing because both keys will lock/unlock the car. So there's some connectivity. Just whatever function reads the keys to start the car. The key card gets read at the wireless charger, so that's different.

They called me yesterday and think that either there's a module in the steering column that reads the key isn't working, or maybe it was the SW update. But they aren't sure. They needed to get approvals to do the warranty work. I'll post here when I find out.

I had a similar problem and called roadside support. After being patched through to the third person, he was in NJ HQ and knew exactly what to do. You basically need to do a hard reset of the car. When this happened, luckily I was at the office under a light and in good weather. He had me download an app so that he could help direct me to

He had me open the rear battery compartment under the rear spare tire cover. Disconnected the battery for five minutes, he had a timer he used on his side. Then reconnect. Started right up after that.

Previous to that, I was having some odd things that weren't major, but kind of annoying that seemed like a typical software memory leak type of issue. Things like the automatic seat ventilator not coming on after a minute of driving, other delays with iDrive.

I have the exactly same problem today, neither key fobs start the card but both can lock/unlock the doors. Placing the key at steering column had no effect. 2021 G05 x45e.

Unfortunately i dont have a working digital key. Even worse, my car windows are open, and there is no way to close them without working keys. Right, we dont have remote window closing in USA.

I had the software update to 07/2021.50 end of november. No issues after update until today.

How did the dealers fix your problem for those who had experienced the same?
