New X6 cigarette lighters not working??

Somehow both the front and rear passenger 12V cigarette lighters are not working. I plug my charger into the one in the trunk it works.
Weirdly the illumination around the lighter is working.

Before I start taking panels off or taking it to the dealer, I wanted to see if this is a recent occurrence with recent builds..

Honestly, if something is missing or unplugged, I'm a little worried to see what else isn't plugged in properly.

The cover has a defect, well a burr that needs to be trimmed/filed as well.

99.9% probability that the 12 volt adapter/charger you’re inserting into the socket is the wrong size.

And yes…if you didn’t know…there are two sizes:
12-volt cigar lighter receptacle and plug, size A:
  • Receptacle inside diameter: 20.93 - 21.01 mm (median 20.97 mm)
  • Plug body diameter: 20.73 - 20.88 mm (median 20.805 mm)
  • Most often used in American automobiles.
12-volt cigar lighter receptacle and plug, size B:
  • Receptacle inside diameter: 21.41 - 21.51 mm (median 21.455 mm)
  • Plug body diameter: 21.13 - 21.33 mm (median 21.18 mm)
  • Most often used in European automobiles, and sometimes as a second socket in American automobiles expressly for DC power connections.
If what you are trying to keep charged has a USB or USB-C or whatever the new connector type is called…perhaps a BMW 12v adapter with the correct connection you need will get your sockets working for you.

there's an SIB addressing what to do due to the narrow 12V sockets

Wow, thanks!
Who would have thought the first "mod" I'd do on my new vehicle is to fiddle around with the screws on the 12V sockets..
Let me try all 3.

I'm a little lost on the Fuse listing. Not sure which one refers to the 12V.

I think it kind of came about when the 12 volt sockets went from the 1950s/1960s/1970s of being dedicated cigar/cigarette lighters (that only required heating up the element to ignite the end of the cigar/cigarette)…to the explosion of the need to power modern portable electronic devices.

#1 & #2 are the “shorties” which are great for the 12v sockets installed in areas that have a cover…like below the cup holder. Or if being used where a “flush” insert is a bit more protective from being kicked…like the 12v sockets mounted low near the floor on the back of the center console for rear passengers.

Tip for fuse diagram:
Look at the icon on the switch or cover…or the icon used in the owners manual…that will be the same icon used on the fuse diagram.
For example, in the pic below from my f06 fuse index…the icon circled in red is for the sunroof switch…the icon on the diagram is the same as the one printed on the sunroof switch. Fortunately in my case…the fuse for the LIGHTER actually has the word written as well as the icon.

Not sure if this is related but I found I couldn't use my radar detector that plugs into the cigarette lighter in my 2021 X5. Worked in another car so determined it was the cigarette lighter. When I took it to the dealer there was a service bulletin for it and they had it for a few hours to fix it.

Gawddamn, you're like the fuse whisperer!

Gotten more useful tech know-how in this short thread than 80% of the forum!

I googled for a G05 owners manual and it shows the icon below for the cig lighter (looks like a lit cig)…look for that icon on your fuse index sheet. And it looks like you were on the same page in the original post..the pic you posted cropped off the paragraph that says OPERATION which also uses the icon which is probably on your fuse diagram sheet.

Neither... Close inspection showed that the vehicle already has the SIB work done with the screw, as in BMW is now using the remedy proper screw...
I can turn off the luggage compartment 12V socket by removing the fuse, however the front one isn't responding. Fuse looks intact. Replaced it with new, still nothing..
Since trunk 12V works with my charger, I am assuming nothing wrong with charger...

It's minor annoyance, I may take it to the dealer at one point, but I'm debating if I should leave the car for hours for them to replace panels and be billed for a stupid amount vs just removing the middle panel myself and checking the cables..

Tomorrow I'll go in with a multimeter to check if it's getting any power.
Weird thing, again, is the ambient light around the socket works and is on another fuse for sure, yet the 12V doesn't work...

PS. it's a bitch to access the fuse box under the passenger side. it's not fully accessible. can't even properly pull and push the fuses in. should have taken a picture...

Does anyone of a fast charger (QC 3.0 at least with 2 USB outlets) that is low profile so the lid can close that actually works with the car as is without a need for soldering?
Preferably available on Amazon.ca?
Thabks in advance.

I have a few of these that I really like. I have been begging them to create a USB C PD version or even just a USB C version but it hasn't happened yet.

PowerDrive 2 Alloy Metal Mini Car Charger

They currently offer these but I don't like how they stick out.

this is what I use. it allows you to close the lid over it (cables unplugged of course). it's also powerful enough to provide the full 15W for my MagSafe charger. this brand doesn't offer USB C x2 ports and dunno if they offer it in Canada store, though.

You're running an Apple MagSafe charger off the USB C port of that charger?

USB C port, yes, but a third party charger from Amazon, not Apple's charger. (I get the circular MagSafe charging icon upon connection which denotes full 15W.)
