Adaptive headlights getting approval

Did anyone else see this? I wasn't aware this was a part of the infrastructure bill.

https://www.bmwblog.com/2021/11/15/c...to-u-s-market/

Would bmw proactively decode adaptive headlights in the US?

It was long overdue, I was hoping for this 4 years ago. Didn't realize it needed something on the level of a $1 trillion bill to get this done.

So long overdue. At least it's happening!

That’s awesome! I also like the idle engine shutoff. I can only imagine the impact that will have on the environment.

Hopefully more cars get built out with mild hybrid systems and don't need to have the engine running for climate control. That would make it a really easy switch.

Hope you think this is so Cool. The money to buy this and other things will be a far longer lasting mess than COOL headlights.

Not engaging in politics. Just stating something that a lot of people have been wanting for nearly a decade is coming, not discussing the method just the result. Modern safety tools and modern safety regulations not based in the 60s are a positive for everyone.

curious: is this what's happening under the hood in current BMW mild hybrid vehicles? HVAC running on the HV battery? if so, didn't know that!

although a PHEV, the 45e's HVAC is completely dependent on its HV battery, which is mostly good, though there have been a couple instances where this proved inconvenient.

That I'm not sure about. I guess it depends on if it has a heat pump. But electric hvac seems like low hanging fruit for curbing idling, that's the only reason I idle (in Utah with lots of cold snowy days).

The X5 45e does not have a heat pump...the compressor is electrically driven.

I'm not sure, I know a lot of manufacturers sold cars with the promise to decode the headlights once legalized. When we bought our Cayenne they said Porsche will decode the headlights once regulations are updated. I don't know what Bmws stance is on it but I would imagine they would at least charge to activate the headlights

while not applicable to mild hybrids, the electrically powered HVAC in the 45e allows preconditioning the cabin in an enclosed space without fear of CO which in turn increases its electric range because the HV battery doesn't work as hard to get the cabin up/down to temp during the initial part of the drive, and it's somewhat silent (just intermittent fans). HVAC continues to work while idling (damn that ACC!). gaining momentum from a dead stop is a thrill due to the electric motor's instant torque.

oh, sorry for jacking the thread!

Truth to be told and being an egoist for the matter, I'm more concerned about what those lights do *to me*, not other drivers.
If nothing - code it away or don't...i don't care.

why "to me" and not "for me"? i believe their adaptive nature is intended to improve your (the driver's) visibility ahead which is a good concern, no?

So the benefit is not to get flashed by other owners of cars with those adaptive lights.
Got it.

Another 50 years and everything will be peachy in my state of NJ.

...thus my question. I don't understand what these lights do *for me*.
How do they improve *my* visibility?

For those of us that don't live in densely populated areas this is the difference between life or death in terms of wildlife. Having the sides lit up while driving through mountain passes where deer frequently will jump onto the freeway is pretty important.
