This is probably the best visual example of adaptive headlights.

The tech blocks out high beams only from area ahead with either oncoming traffic or traffic you are following, all other areas remain lit by high beams. Result is better visibility for you since high beams otherwise remain on vs shutting off completely like they do today.

Demo below at 1:10.

It benefits everyone. You get to keep your brights on and see much more, much clearer and they get to not be blinded by it. Plus there's a wow factor when people in your car see it in action.

That depends - do you currently drive with your high beam left on even when there are other cars in front of you or oncoming?

If so, then this benefits other drivers as your high beam won't blind them anymore.

If not, then this benefits you, because now you can have high beam on when there are other cars in front of you or oncoming.

So the remaining question is whether BMW will decode the "decode" on these. I hope so and I see no reason why they wouldn't....

This may be left up to the states.
Thus up to the dealers.

Our laws are complicated.
Feds may lift a restriction, but a state may be mandating it.

…and the other way around like with the dope.

Perhaps a benefit to all since it should lessen accidents due to helping to avoid blinding of oncoming vehicle's driver. Lot's of people light sensitive and modern high beams are temporarily blinding to many.

The hardware already exists and many people have already coded their US vehicles to enable it. So, from a cost basis, if it was done as part of an OTA update, it would cost BMW nothing...whether they do it or not, at least those the do change theirs to enable this, they'd no longer be illegal, so that's a benefit.

The basis of this is that you as a driver get more area illuminated, and while this works with the LED adaptive headlights, when coupled with the laser option, you get the advantage of longer distance as well. Now, the US lamp housing is slightly different, and is driven with a lower voltage so the lasers aren't as powerful as those used elsewhere, that part probably won't change.

FWIW, to get this to work involves actually removing a software module that inhibits it, then flipping some software switches to tell the existing system to enable the function...all possible with an OTA update, as I understand it, but if not, certainly at the dealership, but BMWUSA would then have to pay the mechanics for their time to do it. That may not get paid for...if they charged a reasonable fee, I'd have them do it if it isn't done OTA.

It would be nice if they do but my guess is that it is unlikely they will code existing cars to have the anti-dazzle since the coding off of it is attached to the VIN.

No it you need to remove the 5AP option code that basically tells the module to not use adaptive headlights. Code my bummer will remove it for $100

Those are the ones, I'd recommend having them do all the stuff you want done while they're coding that.
