Check Engine Light On Twice Already
My car is 2024 X5 50e. Got it September 2023. In December, check engine light came up first time at 1300 miles. Went back to dealer and they fixed some A/C fan sensor. Today March 31 2024, light on again at 3500 miles. Need to go back to dealer again. Is there anyone as lucky as I am? Is X5 50e really such unreliable?

I hope you get this fixed and put behind you. I gotta tell you, I pay attention to EV/Hybrid posts, to learn of issues. I am not even close to getting one and posts with issues place me even farther away from getting one...

One has to realize that forums like this are populated with primarily enthusiasts or people with a problem…the vast majority of people don’t participate or have problems. IOW, it’s not necessarily representative of the whole picture, but a narrowly focused one. Then again, a CEL can be as simple as someone that didn’t tighten their gas cap fully.

^True statement, but think about it, if the % of people posting here about issues is representative of the overall population with issues, the problem is bigger than expressed here...in a matter of numbers speaking.

True. There are likely many more owners not on the forum, yet wo are experiencing the CELs.

There are, but as jad03060 stated, there can be no comparison between the number reporting problems here and the number having problems in the real world.
It would be like trying to determine how many people are sick at any given time by taking a poll at a hospital and then expecting that percentage to be applicable elsewhere. Product surveys themselves have a number of built-in biases, one of which is that people are more likely to respond to it in the first place if they want to complain about some aspect of the product or sales experience. |

I think it was Turtelboy that said 40k 50e have already been sold. We probably have 100 on here. TB's data ends at 3/8 but only 76 people reported in at that time, with 46% having issues.
While 46% is horrible, 76 is not a good indicator of what's going on with 40k owners. I'm still crossing my fingers. We're only at 3800 miles b/c I separated my shoulder on 3/2 and that ended all of this year's snowboard trips, which is where I would have put on another 1500 miles by now. People talk about the percentages or failure rates but ultimately when it comes down to me personally, it either happens or it doesn't, that's 0% or 100%. If it happens to me, I can't accept the headache after paying 80k. The only thing I can do is to walk away from it, at this moment. |

Nothing in life is 100% except that eventually, you’ll die. Same is true with any product. Now, if you say had a Land Rover from a while ago, you might expect problems, but with BMWs, not so much! It happens.

Let me be clear that I hope no one has an issue with their BMW hybrids - but I've had three hybrids so far and had issues with 2 of the three. Again, I hope everyone gets a car without issues, but maybe a group of these hybrid owners start a class action law suit and get to see the real numbers from BMW on these CELs and DRIVETRAIN MALFUNCTION issues. There are lawsuits out there now against hybrids but not for this. Last edited by leightos; 04-02-2024 at 01:54 AM.. |

Without a more exact accounting, saying you had an issue doesn’t mean much. The nature of the problem, and whether it was software or hardware is more useful. Then, one has to know whether the issue was a common one to both ICE and PHEV/EV, or was distinct to one group or the other. Then, it’s useful to know if it was an annoyance, or a dead on the side of the road issue, and many of the complaints end up being not understanding the vehicle, and maybe a problem to the individual, but it’s just the way things work with that vehicle by design (that you may not agree with, or accept as fact). Certainly, things can break, but that’s what warranty is for. A repeated fault of the same issue is useful information on the same vehicle and would likely result in a more intensive investigation by all involved. BMW does not make every part in their vehicles, nor does any vehicle manufacturer, but they do not intentionally buy defective parts. It’s to their best interest to deliver a vehicle with the least amount of problems possible as warranty work just cuts into their bottom line and affects future sales, too. BMW tends to be closer to the top of the quality list than most. Not saying that they and others shouldn’t try to be better, but of the three BMWs I’ve owned, I’ve not had any major issues that weren’t covered by warranty, and then, none of them bricked the vehicle.
Many vehicles have at least one issue after a purchase…they are complex entities, and while many can be caught either at the factory or the dealer before delivery, infant mortality is a fact of life…some things you just can’t predict with reliability. |
