Aftermarket rims causing warped rotors
I've had continued issues with my rotors warping. Dealership realized I have aftermarket rims (Art Replica 181), and have stated my rotors are warping because the rims aren't designed to dissipate the heat like stock BMW rims do.
Any truth to that?? Last edited by oldguy00; 01-19-2024 at 06:32 AM.. |

That said, I'm kind of stuck and will just give in and get some BMW wheels and resurface the rotors, and hope for the best. Was just wondering if anyone else had been told this... |

You can claim that your replicas dissipate heat better than OEMs. |

I always retorque the lugs myself after wheel has been removed. I've had some that were way way over torqued.

I had the exact same experience with the ART 181 Replica wheels.
I'm on the west coast and ordered them from a dealer from Ontario when I first purchased my car. I rode on the wheels for about 4 months before I started to feel a brake shudder when braking at highway speeds. At first, BMW claimed it was the wheels, which I thought was ridiculous. I've had tons of aftermarket wheels before, never have I had this happen. However, when they asked me to come down to the shop, they showed me the damage to my rotor hats. There were little grooves/indents caused by the mounting surface of the wheels. I was upset, my car was only 5 months old at the time and I had about 5000km on it. Since it was caused by me, I paid for 4 new rotors out of my own pocket, because it wasn't covered under warranty. After that experience, I purchased the 748M winter wheelset directly from BMW. Can you take a pic of the rear of your wheel for me, specifically the mounting surface? I want to see if looked like mine. |

Pics - do you mean the back inside of the wheel itself, or do you mean the hub surface on the car? |

BTW, I should clarify.....I've had this issue twice now, first time was a year ago, and we eventually replaced rotors and pads. Second time basically started about a month ago.
Meaning.....it happened each time the winter Art Replica wheels were put back on the car.......uggh.. |

For my winter set I have wheels from Replika, a Canadian manufacturer. Same price range as yours. Been using them for 2 winters with no issues. I do. |

I'm gonna be out enough money from the 181's and the damage to my brakes, that I don't want to chance it with another set of knock offs. Just got back from the dealer, getting the 19" 735's put on next week, and a set of rotors we machined last year when trouble shooting the same issue. I'm -hoping- the brake pads, which were put on new last winter, will be OK to use, that the warping of the rotors over the past month won't have damaged them. |

Since my pads were very new and I noticed the issue very early, they said I wouldn’t need to replace them as well. It’s been 2 years since that experience, no issues. |

Still curious if the OP can get a photo up of the mounting surface for us to see. I got rid of the wheels 2 years ago, gave them to a wheel repair shop, not sure if they worked on them or recycled the metal. |

OK, pics of the back side of the Art Replica's attached. I can see and feel a lip / raised ring, a little over a cm wide going around the outside of the mating surface. My finger shows the line marking the inside edge of the 'ring'. Odd that it goes through the bolt holes. So, I don't know if that lip was there when the wheels were new, or if the material is soft and the BMW hub somehow made it? I'm thinking it was there when new as if it were caused by the hub, it wouldn't be going through the bolt holes? Last edited by oldguy00; 01-25-2024 at 07:41 AM.. |
