X5 is Most Profitable Model For BMW and Fourth in Auto Industry

According to Bloomberg, the X5 is BMW's most profitable model and ranks fourth in the auto industry behind the Porsche 911, Aston Martin DBX and Ferrari F8 Tributo.

The BMW X5 will account for 16% of auto earnings for BMW, while constituting just 7% of BMW's sales volume.

All these models generate "a disproportionately high level of overall earnings," says Michael Dean, automotive equity research analyst for Bloomberg Intelligence, speaking via phone from the Frankfurt Auto Show.

I always thought Porsche asks way too much for their models and it holds me back knowing that they have huge margins because you get less for more money but guess they caught me of guard here now too with X5

I guess I am a little surprised by this stat, as I do think the X5 is priced to deliver a fairly good value considering what it is equipped with and its competition. I imagine that the healthy 50i price differential over the 40i is very profitable, but I suspect there are relatively few 50i models sold compared to 40i.

I wonder if these stats take into account the impact of warranty claims. I have taken my X5 in for warranty items far, far more than any vehicle I or anyone in my entire extended family ever has. And from what I read on these boards, I don't think I am alone.

I might be missing something here from some comments. Are people expecting a 1 - 1 ratio on earnings and number of sales? Of coarse you pay more than it cost to make and everyone knows new model years the typical buyer isn't hunting for the most discount they chase the NEW. lol I know I paid more for my 2019 X5 than I could have for other models or years.

we have noticed not only has the x5 been steady but the x7 and x3 also have been selling fast at our store

I believe the huge profits The price jump between a 40 & a 50 is ridiculous . Almost $20,000. And frankly the 40 is under powered at 335hp for $62,000 base. The new Lincoln Navigator starts at $54K with 400hp/400lb.

When I bought my 650i M couple, the difference between the 6 cyl 640 was only $11,000. Greed is alive & well my friends.

the 40i is also making that power at the wheels unlike the navigator which is garbage with that awful 10 speed which is always hunting for gears when you give it th beans. food for thought

Market competition is what sets the price of the cars we buy. And the profit motive is what has given us the incredible continuing advancement in car technology that we enjoy today. If we had the alternative, government regulation and price controls, we would all be driving black electric Ugos. If car buyers are willing to pay $20,000 more for a 50i, it is not over priced.

Perhaps a little research is in order before posting, won't make you look as bad. The difference between the base 2020 40i and 50i is $14,950. In addition to the larger engine, the 50i comes with some options as standard (Vernsaca, items in Convenience, Premium and Executive packages, HK, etc.) that you would pay for with the 40i.

My mistake, I meant the Aviator. Got to tell you, the reviews I have read so far are very positive. Great looking SUV in & out. I may test drive one to see for myself.

The apples to apples difference between the 6 and 8 in all BMW models has historically been about $10K, and that still holds true with the X5.

Well, I was actually looking at the 40i vs the M50i. That's where it's 20k.
I do realize the M50 has the M Sport pkg, brakes,ect.
If looking at the 40i compered to the 50i your paying that $14,950 more for just 110hp.
And the additional content still leaves a huge gap between the 2. The math does not make sense to me.

When I configure an M sport 40i and M50i with similar equipment, I get a difference of about 11-12k. So not much different than your example with the 640 and 650 earlier in the thread.

still uses the 10 speed shitbox. I drove the navigator and expedition which use the same tranny and are awful. I mean the only nice thing is you can hear the turbos spooling up but power is elusive until the higher rev range if you get it to select the proper gear. BMWs I6 is incredibly smooth and I'm not a die-hard fan of the brand. They do things correctly and I applaud them for it. Others they fail at and I crucify them accordingly which you can verify by my post history.

We currently have an F150 with the 10 speed and my previous vehicle was a Yukon Denali with the 10 speed (the transmission is a joint venture between Ford and GM). FWIW, I have found it to be a fine transmission and haven't experienced it to be any better or worse than my X5's 8 speed.

I read the article above about the Aviators and Explorers — that is quite concerning. My mother is in the market for replacing her GX460, and while she was considering getting a new X5, I have been discouraging that based on my own issues and those of many members on this board. As mentioned above, I think it is just sound advice to avoid first year production models... I certainly have learned my lesson

maybe it was the ones I drove? I know a Ford Engineer who also shares the same opinion of that transmission and would rather run a ZF8 Speed any day of the week. the issue is when you hit the gas hard it doesn't know what gear to be in causing a delay since the gears are so short.

Comparing to the top 3, x5 contribution margin is 25% vs 50%
