Lets start new thread for iDrive 7 OTA updates

Does any have knowledge if BMW will have any further updates for the G05 platform with iDrive 7 in US? I'm still on 07/21 and I keep checking and checking and my BMW app states I am up to date.

07/22 is due out soon, however they are prioritising iDrive 8 models.

They have committed for this version on iDrive 7 though.

03/2022 has already been released and many including myself have already received it OTA. 07/2022 is available via ISTA (dealer update) but not pushed OTA to older vehicles yet. Probably as sahajesh stated it will be after iDrive 8 rollout.

Not OTA but has anyone tried direct download? I use direct download with my other vehicles, so much faster to complete. My recent build came with 07/2022.41

It is not possible to do that for iDrive 7.

Adding my engineering hat on - it looked to me usage statistics showed manual update wasn’t really used. It was maybe less than 1%. So, it just didn’t make any sense to support sw update this way and make the complex system more complex. OTA is simpler for most of the users and cars are more likely to be updated.

At least, this is what we do in our products. I don’t think it’s different in bmw.

A lot probably has to do with marketing, OTA is a must have in the market. USB's are a thing of the past as well as systems growing, becoming more complicated, etc.

Also makes it harder to reverse engineer the code when it's loaded OTA versus having the code on a USB stick you can extract and run on an emulator.

are there other options out there to manually update the software other than at the dealership?

Well you can buy an ICOM and download ISTA (dealer tool) various places along with the firmware files but there is some risk involved with bricking the vehicle if you don't have a suitable power supply, etc. The only time I've manually done it at home was when I retrofitted the trailer module on my wife's X7 and it updates the applicable modules at the same time along with coding it for new options. It's a bit of a pucker situation the whole time if you're smart enough to know what can happen versus just blindly clicking buttons. To be honest, I'm sort of surprised BMW does it OTA as it's doing the same thing but without requiring the vehicle to be on a 100A power supply like the dealers use with ISTA.

With the investment in tools to do it yourself, it's probably more cost effective just to pay the dealer or independent shop to do it once or twice a year.

I saw someone from Canada post that they received the notification so things are starting to roll out in at least part of NA, all should be soon.

Is that on your 30d? I believe I'm on 07/2022.50, so not sure if there is a slightly newer version or not?!

I got the update today too. Version below.

I partially hate updates because I have to recode everything all over again. I have it all in a neat excel sheet. And they change stuff like the fob thing that now if my wife opens or gets close to the car first it thinks she's driving. Before the key used to detect which side the key was on. I digress...

Was anyone able to find a way to code everything at once? I was debating creating my own 'cheat file' in bimmerutility and checking all the boxes after an upgrade.

I also wish someone found a way to code M font on the HUD makes me kind wanna go back to full M display. I wish you could make it display on the console screen too like my old x3.
