High Speed Collision Avoidance works.
I am in the middle of a 2200 mile family roadtrip with my family in my new X5 50i M-Sport. 200 miles on the odometer when we left from PA to Florida. Construction out side Orlando is a mess with multiple lane shifts and make shift construction zones. Traffic flow on 3 lanes was moving 75-80mph 3 accross and tight. A couple cars ahead couldn't make the 3 lane shift and the turns at that speed was too much for their skill level. So some slammed on their brakes causing multiple cars slamming into their sides and it was like a NASCAR wreck. My X5 was on ACC and as soon as I saw smoke and car parts flying into the air 8 cars up, my Collision Avoidance was already taking hold of the vehicle with a red beeping alarm and the sound of anti lock braking on full strength. Seatbelts tightened up and the X5 was slowing faster than the Toyoya Sequioa that his auto brake activated but ran into the car ahead. The X5 swerved into the left media allowing the Lexus RX350 behind me enough room to tap the Toyota Sequioa I was following. We managed to pass the carnage of cars on the left.
The take away is the M Brakes with advanced safety made our $100k X5 seem like a bargain. My wife was amazed. It out performed the other vehicles safety features around us by such a margin it was shocking. Obviously the driver is the biggest safety feature but in a urban area when forced to drive around inferior skill levels, I will take all the added safty edge I can buy. |

The X5 swerved into the left median? On its own, or you swerved it into the median?

Not a scratch other than my new X5 is sitting in the resort parking lot and I can't give it a proper hand wash until I get home. As far as my wife and I are concerned, the X5 is worth every penny and any thing beyond this point is icing on the cake.
FYI...Remote 3D camera on the app has also worked flawlessly. I check on my X5 via remote app 4 times a day. Last edited by MystroX5; 02-05-2019 at 08:44 PM.. |

I have experienced the X5 take over once when a tractor trailer drifted into my lane. It was directly to the side so I didn't see it. There was an audible alarm, and it displayed "Side Impact Collision Avoidance" on the instrument cluster as it initiated a shift onto the left median. I then sped up and out of the trucks way. |

Was the median not concrete? Perhaps a ditch or 'breakdown lane'? I'm glad you're all okay, I've had my fair share of things happen out here but damn that takes the cake. I bet that Lexus driver was glad they didn't hit you since it would've been at a higher speed

Wow! That is some amazing tech and I'm glad to hear that it performed as it should, and flawlessly, when the situation most needed it. The best thing is that your family is ok and as far as I'm concerned, the car just paid for itself with that experience.

On my last car I skipped the nanny options because I wanted to be in control of the car and I wasn't sure the technology was there in 2014. This time I opted to embrace the new technology the same way I did when ABS brakes came out and air bags before that. Stories like this make me glad I ordered our G05 with all the safety stuff (except night vision). Worth every penny. Have fun on the rest of your trip. |

I was a bit afraid of that level of automation so I didn’t get that package. Good to know that it worked, and was well worth the investment. Maybe next time....

Wow that's quite the story! Glad you are safe.
My 6 year old mentioned to me that this car has magic..between the reverse assistant, ACC, and gesture control that she loves to play with...this is another magic trick in our X5! lol Actually think its called Evasion Assistant

Standard feature. Most all of us have disabled it because of its aggressive intervention.

Yes. Lane assist set on medium with, "close to markers" or narrow highway setting. I did not have autonomous steering on with the ACC. Evasion Assistant was what took control. I was starti to steer left and felt the steering take control the same direction I was going. It just felt like another hand was on the wheel guiding it. Kinda like Carrie Underwood's song "Jesus take the wheel" moment.

Glad to read you and family are safe and the safety systems worked. I believe you are at version .23 of the software which is what I have.
Did you notice the steering wheel lights come on? I only noticed there were lights in the steering wheel just above the controls for cruise/volume etc yesterday as I was changing lanes while on ACC. Not sure if it was because of blind spot detection. Didn't find any mention of it in the manual. |
