The 736 package is pretty cheap if you want to do a square BMW approved 20" setup but they have other 20" packages available too.

Correct but unfortunately I find it a too much of a premium price for rims I don't like
So that is the reason why I want to look for my "own" rims that I like

If you're willing to put non-BMW approved wheels on the vehicle, then I wouldn't think you'd care about using non-BMW approved tires at that point.

I also doubt you can get a comparable set of wheels/TPMS/tires for less than the price BMW sells their winter setups for in my research, that is another drawback of doing it yourself. That being said, I'm still planning on buying a staggered set of orbit grey 744s to put the summers on and relegate the stock 741s for winter duty.

You are correct, I should have specified. Doesn’t change the driving.

The parts department at the local BMW dealer confirmed that they do fit and clear the M brakes, so I was pretty confident that I would not encounter any problems.

There are definitely a lot of moving pieces and test fitment requirements if you go for a complete custom (previously untested) rim setup: rim size, hub size and need for adapter rings, bolt pattern, offsets and need for spacers, lug bolt lengths, clearance of large brakes, clearance of other wheel well mechanics, tire sizing once specific rims are proven, compatible TPMS, ... a lot to get right.

But cost-wise? At least around here (Canada), BMW winter rim/tire packages are easily 2-4x the cost of doing it yourself (if you don't count your time and risk of getting everything right) for equivalent quality. Yes, you can easily spend same as BMW for drastically better setups (true-forged, designer, etc.).

The cheapest cost wise using comparable wheels I was able to find at Tire Rack were the OZ Hyper XT HLT in 21" which are actually cheaper than the 20" version with Vredestein Wintrac Pro. Mounted, balanced with TPMS is a little over $3600 USD before shipping. Since I can get OE BMW wheels for the same price, it just makes more sense to get that route.

They also have the BBS SX in a 20" square setup with Michelin CrossClimate SUV for a little less than $3200 USD shipped but if I'm doing it myself, I'd rather keep a staggered setup.

I've got the non-rft 22" 742m for summer and the non-rft 20" 740m for winters. I have snow chains for the 20" but with covid I won't be going skiing unfortunately.

For the 20" wheels, what is the narrowest size winter tire have you used/recommend to use? I am not planning on buying a second set of wheels so just looking to improve the traction on the standard 20" wheels. Perhaps going down to 255/50 from the original 275/45, which gives a little more sidewall and a narrower contact patch?

Are you putting on your winter wheels if you are not going skiing? I would consider not putting them on.

I'm a bit in doubt. Last couple of winters hardly got any snow/ice. But I don't want to get surprised by the weather and have to swap them when I don't have time. :-)

Just for the record, the 748M-based official package here (Canada) is $6000 CAD before tax and install and about $7000 CAD all in (dealers don't generally discount MSRP, but you might have leverage if purchasing with car order). You can get A LOT of after-market winter rim/tire/TPMS/mounting for that and a typical setup would be half without much effort and 1/3 with effort. Markets vary.

BMW Canada doesn't have a lot of options, but they also have the 36112467226 748M General Grabber package for $4000 CAD which is a considerable savings over the Pirelli Scorpion Winter version. Both are 3 Peak Mountain rated, so if those are the wheels you want, go that route.

I've always thought about that package and General Grabber as off-road/mud, not winter/snow/ice/urban. In any case, while thank you for researching further, I am actually all set as of last winter :-). OZ rims and my favourite winter tire, Blizzak DM-V2, with exactly stock offsets achieved with spacers and custom length (yes, I had to cut them :-) bolts.

I purchased the 740M square winter set from my dealer for ~$3900 last month. They've got Michelin Alpin 5's. I debated a 21" set for the looks but decided on function over form for my winter wheels.

On the G05 X5 you did great with going with 20”ers.

Alpin 5s are super highly-rated, pricey but amazing tires judging by the comparison tests...

I did the same thing as several others in this thread did. First time I've bought Winter tires, as I ran 19" all-seasons on my F15 (still do...my wife drives it now), which worked OK.

I just had the 20", 740M's installed with Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 SUV's, replacing my Summer setup of 21", 741M's with staggered setup. I have to admit, I miss the 741M's, but the 740M's look nice and will be great for the Winter.

Are you using star tires ? Because I was also looking for non-rft (it seems this should be better comfort wise).

Yes I think so, Pirelli Scorpion Winter on 20" and Continental PremiumContact 6 on 22". For the 22" I'm 100%, for the 20" I'm not because they are in bags now, so can't verify. But the car was delivered on the 20", so it would make sense.

I am picking up my 2021 X5 M50i tomorrow and the dealer is offering me these General 20" on BMW rims. They are in stock, so there should be a good price. But are these tires any good? I have used Blizzaks for years and loved them. The car is coming with the black 22" rims.

Thanks.

Grabbers AT's are all-weather (3 peak rated) and good for mud/off-road as well. Rubber compound and tread pattern do not perform as well as a dedicated winter tire in the cold/snow/ice.

The specific winter version: https://generaltire.com/tires/winter/grabber-arctic

Not really planning much Mud or "Off Road". But snow and ice for sure.

Is there a place to shop for BMW snow tire packages?
