When my salesman gave me a rundown of the different features, he said that when evasion assist activates, it will brake the inside wheel(s) ( so the left one(s) when trying to avoid the accident by turning to the left, and vice versa) to help turn the car out of the way faster than you normally would be able to. It then will do the opposite side to straighten you out before applying full brakes to get the car stopped.

Definitely very cool stuff when it all works well.

Is this really Collision Avoidance or just the ACC since you said that was active. I think the question is if under your control and the cars in front of you stopped suddenly at highway speeds, what would it have done. Not sure this actually answers that.

Awesome story. Did you have to stop at Walmart for new underwear?

I believe collision avoidance kicks in if you try to steer out of your lane in an emergency braking situation. You have to actually initiate the steering for it to kick in and take control to get you out of the lane safely. If you keep the car straight, I don't think it will try to swerve you out of your lane.

There's so much I still have to learn about this vehicle! I had no idea there was any feature like this. Thanks for posting!

I hope I never experience this myself but it's good to see the system actually worked as intended.

To me these safty features are like a ejector seat in a Jet. If you need it you are way past the ability to save your own butt.

Wow, glad you got out of that with not even a scratch, I hope I never have to experience that but so glad to know it is there and does work! Closest I have come was I did have the whole dash turn red the other day when I was going highway speed and the whole highway came to a dead stop, I was just hitting the brakes when the car beeped flashed all kinds of red on the dash and I think started to help brake - wasn't anything like you experienced, but the car was ready to do something for me.

Thank you for sharing your story. With all the debate about whether some of the safety systems in the G05 work properly, I figured it was only a matter of time before someone would experience a situation either proving or disproving efficacy of the systems. Some really crazy drivers out there...

Thanks for sharing!

This story has me more worried our X5 collision avoidance and emergency braking aren’t work though. As I’ve mentioned before we have yet to see a single flash of the red indicator since we got the car almost 4000 miles ago. And we have had plenty of people cut us off or pull directly in front of us way too close...never one hint of the car recognizing that.

I’ll will say the ACC works perfectly. Will brake and come to a stop as expected, and even stopped us pretty quick once. But no red indicator and that only happened with ACC active.

Weren't you having an issue with the cross traffic not working at one point? Was that ever resolved?

Someone cutting you up will have a much lower relative speed than the anchors being dropped by traffic in front during an emergency brake. Are you certain you've experienced a condition where the assist features should intervene? It would be annoying if they were too sensitive.

I don’t think we have experienced a situation where the auto-braking should have triggered, however I do think the red warning icon should have come on lots of times. We have the warning set to “early” in iDrive.

In a loaner 2019 X3 I had for 2 days I saw the red warning come on 3 times...and that was in about 30 miles of driving. 4000 miles in the X5 and zero warnings. Seems odd to me!

Sorry that happened to you and your family but the "in field testing" is invaluable to all users here. Thanks for sharing. Hope to never have to use it but glad to know it is there.

What's evasion assist? Cannot find it in manual.

Perhaps it is not the correct nomenclature for the feature.

Here is a video explaining it in a nutshell:

A couple cars ahead couldn't make the 3 lane shift and the turns at that speed was too much for their skill level. So some slammed on their brakes causing multiple cars slamming into their sides and it was like a NASCAR wreck. My X5 was on ACC and as soon as I saw smoke and car parts flying into the air 8 cars up, my Collision Avoidance was already taking hold of the vehicle with a red beeping alarm and the sound of anti lock braking on full strength. Seatbelts tightened up and the X5 was slowing faster than the Toyoya Sequioa that his auto brake activated but ran into the car ahead. The X5 swerved into the left media allowing the Lexus RX350 behind me enough room to tap the Toyota Sequioa I was following. We managed to pass the carnage of cars on the left.
The take away is the M Brakes with advanced safety made our $100k X5 seem like a bargain. My wife was amazed. It out performed the other vehicles safety features around us by such a margin it was shocking. Obviously the driver is the biggest safety feature but in a urban area when forced to drive around inferior skill levels, I will take all the added safty edge I can buy.
Glad you are all ok and sorry for any who are not as a result.

I can't wait to pick up my car in April. I have been doing a weekly 3.5 hr drive each way (~750km) for approximately 10 years for work and have seen my fair share of bad accidents and had a couple of close calls myself.

The X5's safety features are next level and a huge factor for purchasing the car.

Thanks for the read, it's great to hear about the cars capabilities 😀
