Truly made me hesitate on the X5. I think the only way to make the X5 and 7 look good is black or dark gray with the black grilles. These grilles are just ugly AF

BMW has finally unveiled the production-spec X7 flagship SUV, and its styling is finally out there for all the world to argue about. Built primarily to capture high-end business in the vast Chinese market, where business moguls are said to be rapidly switching from saloons to SUVs, or Sports Activity Vehicles (SAVs) in BMW-speak, the styling is apparently quite popular among the Far-Eastern elite. |

Pressure from the rising economical Asian kitsch market
And not only the grill, there are many other kitsch options. Europe and Northern America is in decay so they make cars in function from where the money is: Asia. |

Back to the future. Take a look at any 1950’s car.

Grills are big for the same reason wheels have become so big - current style trend.
One difference is that big grills don't impair function, while big wheels do. |

How they went from the Gina to that monstrosity of a concept is beyond me. Looking at Lexus sales decline since the 2016 grill change seems like a pretty good deterrent to that sort of cartoonish ugliness.

Saw an article a few years back where they calculated the pertentage of actual grill vs. fake. It generally wasnt’ much. Special award went to Tesla model S because it didn’t even have an engine (it was written before they scrapped that fake grill)
