Good concert - bad concert

This thread was inspired by BOOF-M3's comment about a Stone's concert in the "What song are you listening to?" thread.

So tell us yours. The good and the bad.

BAD - The Cars at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium in NY. They sucked! I guess they are a studio band.

GOOD - The Black Crows - They opened for ZZ Top at Madison Square Garden. They kicked ass.

I'll be back with more.

I saw BC open for ZZ Top in Hartford CT on that tour and they were GREAT...until CR stopped the show a few songs in because dudes were fist fighting in the front row lol.

I have seen at least 500 concerts/shows over the years as I used to do a little music writing/interviews, so there are a ton of greats, less duds. However, if I have to pick ONE show for BEST/WORST, it would be:

BEST: Audioslave - Hartford CT
WORST: Robert Fripp opening for Porcupine Tree in NYC. (I'm still not convinced he wasn't just tuning up and trying a new pedal rig )

Black Crowes wow yea. We were on them from day one and the albums just kept getting better until they didn't… As Is how all bands end up. But we saw them on the 92 and 94 tours but in 94 we were 5th row in a small venue in Manhattan and we watched them drink a 1/5 of Jack and it was gone by the end of the show. Yea the Black Crowes, best American rock band from 1990 to today hands down.

Have been to many concerts: have seen The Rolling Stones, Van Halen, Motley Crue, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, The White Stripes, The Eagles, Deep Purple, Ray Davies, Ozzy, Jackson Browne, etc.

Been to many different places: The Forum, Dodger Stadium, Hollywood Bowl, The Greek Theater, The Glass House, Glen Helen Amphitheater, Whiskey a Go Go, The Wiltern Theater, Ontario Motor Speedway, etc.

The best ones were at the small places: Van Halen and Motley Crue (at different times) at the Whiskey, White Stripes at The Glass House, Ray Davies at the Wiltern.

There were others but it was a long time ago and I'm sure I don't remember them all. Will update when/if more come to mind.

Cool topic thread!
One of the consistently best bands I go see is Def Leppard. They sound as amazing live as they do in the studio.
Probably a threeway tie for all time best concert is between seeing RUSH in Wembley Arena back in the early 80s, Van Halen during their "Right Here Right Now" concert in the early 90s (man Eddie was in his absolute prime then) and believe it or not, AC/DC here in Colorado - they blew everyone away.

As for worst concert....unfortunately it was the Eagles when they played Coors Field here in Denver a few years ago. Glenn Frey had passed, and while Vince Gill was actually pretty good, the sound was mixed horribly and the temperatures even at night were above 105 degrees, so the whole band was subdued. LOL the only band member who showed any degree of enthusiasm was Joe Walsh who started the concert by saying he was probably going to scare some of the young people!

I've been fortunate to see many concerts due to a free ticket hook up.

Best: in no particular order
1. Bob Seger: no frills concert. He rolled on stage in jeans and a white t shirt cut off at the shoulders. Just great vocals considering how many years he's been performing. A solid concert.

2. Taylor Swift: not a fan of her music but great production. They handed out wrist bracelets that were synched to the beat of the music.

3. REO Speedwagon, Def Leppard & Tesla: just solid vocals and performance.

4. The Eagles: this was more like a sit-n-listen concert style. They told you what inspired their songs and it was just a great concert.

5. Garth Brooks: at his age the fact that he did 2 concerts/day for a weekend and still had the energy and put on a show was impressive. Fun concert.

6. George Strait: great vocals and no big production.

7. Zac Brown Band: I like their music but was impressed by how they perform as a band and how diverse they are. They would break from country and play rock and roll and even some alternative. Very well rounded as far as artists.

Worst:
1. Madonna: she brought politics into her concert and leave that shit at home. She didn't sing her old stuff which is what people want to hear. Tons of people walked out in the beginning and mid concert. Was just bad all around.

2. Stevie Nicks: she talked a ton during her concert and a lot of it felt like rambling. Left before it ended. I'll stick to listening to her on the radio.

3. Drake: I've seen him 3 times (once again free) and this last concert with Migos was horrid. Drake didn't sound that great and Migos whoever they are we're freaking horrid live.

4. John Mayer: maybe it's because I don't like his music but I couldn't take it and left. It made me want to sleep.

Concerts I've been to: Usher, Boyz II Men, New Kids on the Block, Salt N Peppa/Vanilla Ice, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Chris Stapleton, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Maroon 5, Katy Perry, Pink, The Rolling Stones, Justin Timberlake, Nickelback, Kid Rock/Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rush, Britney Spears (major production and saw her 1st concert back. It was weird. Don't think she was actually signing), 3 Doors Down & Seether, Motley Crue, Janet Jackson (wasn't impressed), Stevie B & Lisa Lisa ( Stevie B can still kick it and sounds amazing live), Rihanna, Guns N Roses, Billy Joel, Chris Brown, James Taylor, The Weekend (great show), U2 (not a big fan and didn't like the concert), Bon Jovi, Journey/Def Leppard, Candlebox, Staind & 3 Days Grace & Mercy Me.

There are a few other sprinkled in there from Mardi Gras Balls & our local music festivals I can't remember or don't have the stubs for. I really enjoyed being able to see so many people perform.

I really loved Def Leppard as well and their drummer kicks ass. I've seen them a few times and always a great show. I'm not a Rush fan at all but Neil Peart is a bad ass drummer.

Oh man, I forgot about Elton - been to a few of his concerts and they have to be right up there among the best I've seen.

As a matter of fact, as I now start to think about this, I'll probably have a few updates to add to these lists.

I'm a bit older than most of you. I grew up in Southern California in the '60s. I was in Hollywood every weekend I could to listen and l to live music on the Strip or other places in L.A. We saw so many concerts live. I wish I'd kept the ticket stubs. So from the '60s, my answer to the OP is:

Best: The Doors at the Whiskey. Unbelievable to see these guys in such a small venue.
Worst: The Doors at the Whiskey 2nd set. Morrison was so wasted he couldn't perform.

Runner up Best: Crosby, Still, Nash, and Young at the Greek Theatre. First 1/2 acoustic. Second 1/2: Wall to wall amps. 100% amazing.

I'll chime in for the subsequent decades after I've given it more thought.

I’ve seen The Stones, The Who, Pink Floyd, Ramones, Twisted Sister, Bob Seger, Elton John, Billy Joel, Bruce Springstein, ZzTop, Cars… and a bunch more I need to remember. Unfortunately, I never saw Zep . My brother did while John Bonham was still around. Jealous!

I agree on the small venues. I saw Walter Trout at either the Stone Pony or the Starland Ballroom. If you like bluesy guitar, check him out.

Some great artists, there. The Who, Pink Floyd. Yeah, would've liked to have seen Led Zeppelin too. You got some great memories and I'm sure some stories to tell.

Your reference to the Stone Pony took me right back to the first time I saw Linda Ronstadt perform when she was lead singer of the Stone Poneys. What a voice! I've seen her several times since. Always amazing.

Saw the Laserium light show at the Griffith Park Observatory many years ago featuring Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon. Does that count? lol

Someone say Stone Pony? Not exactly my best photo.
Starland was my every weekend stomping grounds. It was called Hunka Bunka and they sold for big bucks to Starland

Point Blank

Notes: It was a hot day that day. Sammy Hagar had a guitar stolen backstage at the Cotton Bowl show; it was returned later that day. However, Hagar vowed to never play it again after it had been handled by someone else, and lit it on fire on stage. Right before Santana's set, the house music mix played their hit "Winning", the lead singer and other band members came onstage and motioned to the sound mixers to try to get the song cut off; afterwards the band did not play "Winning" during their set.

Correction: Sammy's guitar was stolen from a previous Dallas show. Was recovered and Sammy held it until the Texas Jam. Where he explained the incident and destroyed the guitar. The guitar was never set on fire. Sammy smashed the guitar onstage and threw it into the crowd.
Hot isn't the right word for it. It was brutal. People passed out everywhere. By the time Journey came on, I had suffered enough and was ready to go. Some of the music was great, but the heat just made it unenjoyable.
