Can I buy remote start after delivery?

I am configuring a 2022 X5 and want to skip the Premium package for $1250 as I don’t need gesture control and HUD and the other package items aren’t avail.

Can I just buy remote start for $300 or whatever through the BMW connected drive app and it will enable it on the X5 for my phone and keyless entry?

On the X3 you can buy for $300 as a standalone option and I also saw a BMW press release that it is available for most models through separate purchase online.

Is this true?

This will allow me to get the upgraded 22”
Non RF wheels I want, ventilated/contour/massage seats, parking assist and cam and drive recorder but still save $1250 for Premium (or technically $950) and also skip the Drivers Pro package to save $3350 (bc it requires Premium and Climate pkg…just hate missing out on adaptive cruise when $30k cars have it standard), but gotta cut some options somewhere so it doesn’t balloon beyond $72k

I have not seen where Remote Start is available in the US after purchase but it may be and someone hopefully will chime in.

I'm going to suggest not skimping on packages/options just to keep the price down. You likely will miss having adaptive cruise just about every time you drive the vehicle. It doesn't make sense to me to spend $72k and not be satisfied when you could spend another $5k or so and have everything you want.

The HUD and DAP are on my list of "must haves".

Wow I didn’t know it’s part of a package. I thought it came std. Lol. I also thought adaptive cruise control would come std. Lol. Yeah I would spend a little more to get adaptive cruise control. HUD is very nice too, a lot nicer than I had thought. Spend some extra if you can.

The only reason I can think of to avoid the HUD expense would be if you always wore polarized sunglasses...depending on exactly their polarization angle, it may be quite hard to read. Otherwise, I find it much nicer to have than to not have and I think it can make you a safer driver as the info you generally need is right in front of you without having to look away from the road.

While I use the preconditioning all of the time in my PHEV, I'm not a big fan of remote start. First, you shouldn't use it while the vehicle is in the garage, and second, just sitting there idling is probably the worst thing you can do for your vehicle and the ecology. The engine and cabin may be comfortable, but the transmission and other rotating parts don't get warmed up until you're moving. I've found that the heaters on most modern vehicles gets heat pretty quickly, so it's not a big deal. Opt maybe instead for heated seats front/rear, which start working almost instantly.

no you can't get it after purchase. and it's very hard to retrofit.

and there is a chip shortage. so anything you don't get from the factory, you won't have for at least several years.

Remote Engine Start is available to purchase in the connected drive store, you'll have to check if it applies (most 2019+ models with an automatic transmission are eligible). I think it's $350 after you've picked up your car. They even had a mistake earlier this year and released it for the manual transmission M3/M4 and then pulled it back.

Totally agree HUD is a must. Love it. This is my 1st BMW and as I'm getting used to where info is displayed, HUD keeps me from delayed, eye searching for info that's right in my road view ahead. I also use it to display route info when I'm using navigation help to find locations. Will always opt for it in any vehicle.

First car I ever owned purchased (in 2008) was a 2005 530i and it had a HUD. I had no idea about HUD before that. I have never owned a car without it since then. It’s a must have imho.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I think you convinced me to do the $3,350 options packages to get HUD/remote start/adaptive cruise which brings damage to $75,150 MSRP.
  • xDrive 40i
  • Arctic Grey Metallic ($550)
  • M-sport ($4700)
  • 22" M Double spoke black (non run-flat + compact spare) ($1,900)
  • Coffee Vernsaca Leather (can't decide between coffee and cognac, in a smaller car would get cognac but with the exterior and the brown wood think maybe coffee is better...the CA said cognac is better at trade-in)
  • Anthracite Brown Poplar Matte Wood
  • Driving Assistance Pro ($1,700) this one forces Premium ($1,250) and 4-zone climate control ($400) for a total swing of ($3,350)
  • Premium ($1,250)
  • Luxury Seating ($1,600)
  • Parking Assistance ($800)
  • Extended Shadowline Trim ($300)
  • Heated Front Seats, Armrests, Steering ($250)
  • Essentially, didn't do Executive, Climate Comfort, running boards, Rear window shades, glass controls, 3rd row+air suspension, alcantara headliner, or the M-sport brakes

So what of that should I change or keep as-is? Coffee vs. cognac? Any options I should get rid of?

$75,150 with the above, $71,800 without Premium/Drivers Assistance Pro/4-zone. Just so close to M50i range now and so much more than the X3 M40i I priced for like $65k so just a little undecided. Last car I purchased like 8yrs ago was $60k MSRP and I bought for $42k.

I would go with Coganc since Coffee has never appealed to me. I always think is isn't as bad as I thought it was but every time I'm at me dealer and look at it, it is. Of course like any other color selection, it is a matter of personal preference.

The X3 M40i is a totally different vehicle so if you think you want that type of driving experience then base your decision on that and not price. The M50i will likely be another $10-15k more for something comparable so not that close.

Just didn't know if that expanse of orange cognac with the brown/grey wood and arctic gray exterior might be a little much. The coffee in that config looked like a nice saddle brown that all matched and really liked the contrast stitching. I also figured it'd wear better and not stain b/c it was darker. But in basically every other BMW I like cognac. I'll let my spouse be the tie break lol.

Yeah, it's deciding for gluttony of space and features (X5) or gluttony of performance but sacrificing some space and features. Both seem to do a good job of being jack of all trades. We just moved back to US and the country we were in had much much smaller cars that I got used to.

I'm sure the X5 at 335hp is plenty fast as it's 5.3sec 0-60 and my "racing" days are probably long over and better to go X5. Just love to hear a nice note when pushing the throttle or feeling acceleration, but neither have V8's in that configuration anyway and they are first and foremost SUVs I guess.

I've been comparing lengths of SUVs - the new Jeep Grand Cherokee will grow to just an inch shorter than X5 this year (a fully loaded one is $66k but bet you could get it for closer to invoice), the Porsche Cayenne is same as X5 and just the curves make it look smaller and is $85k, Tahoe's/Escalade's/etc. are all 10-15" longer full-size, so I guess X5 is in a good sweet spot. X3 is 186"x74" and X5 is 194.3"x79", wish the X5 was right in the middle of that.

Great tip. Remote start was a $300 (seperate/unpackaged) option when I bought my X5 in late 2018 (delivered Dec 21). I cheaped out on this ONE option because, at the time, I worked in an office park where my car could not be reached by remote start. I work from home now. Flash forward - dumb decision that I regretted and the ONE thing that pisses me off that I did not purchase.

Just went and checked - $300 to enable now. Good on BMW to allow for that. I could use it now, often. Worth it to me as I will be driving this car for another 3 years at least... Purchased!

I'm partial to the Coffee. Here are some pics I posted after I picked-up my 2020 X6: https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...php?p=26075661. I felt the Coffee looked best with the Manhattan Green. (Note: I do have Merino leather...which might look slightly different from the Vernasca.) I really like the contrast stitching and am very happy with my choice. I might have considered Tartufo, but that wasn't available in the X6 at that time...

Agree with this 100%. I don't have adaptive and I wish I did. I do have HUD and also now love it.

They're both great colors. We wanted Cognac but had to consider Coffee due the wheel size. When seeing in person, we couldn't accept Coffee. It's a bit too dark for us. So we went with Cognac. Here is a shot of it. I think it looks pretty close.

I want to like the HUD, but my sun glasses are polarized and make the HUD useless.

Are you all using polarized sun glasses and if so, do you have some sort of trick of making the HUD work with them?

Yeah this is what bugs me. It's nice but unfortunately can't be too useful during the day. Sometimes I had to give up the shades because I needed HUD. Some say if you lower the display, you can manage to get away and/or see better. I need it up highest so that trick does not work for me.
