Unresolved knocking/hollow rear rattle 2022 M50i

I have annual oil change appointment scheduled with the dealer in a month, and I plan to raise this with them. However, I am not very confident they will spend a lot of time and diagnose/fix the issue. Wanted to solicit feedback and ideas to give them…

New ‘22 M50i. Absolutely love the vehicle but I have an unresolved knocking or hollow rattle sounding noise that appears to be coming from the rear—possibly favoring driver side. I have checked everything I can to try and replacing and fix the issues for months now. I have placed felt in many places where it might be occurring but to no avail yet.

Noise is heard when going at slow speeds and mostly below 45mph. Doesn’t sound mechanical or suspension related. When momentum of car shifts from front to back or vice versa, the knocking is heard once or twice and then stops when all momentum is going same direction.

I am pretty much out of ideas and solutions at this point and looking for help or others that might have experienced the same thing!
  • Trunk rubber stoppers (I did the paper test so it’s tight but still pulls out when close). The hatch is still primary suspect in my opinion. I have put felt on the tabs attached to hatch to solve for any hatch side to side movement too.
  • I have inspected everything in spare tire compartment, nothing seems loose.
  • I have inspected the loose foam where first aid kit area is stored and made sure it’s not loose (btw my vehicle did not come with anything in that area).
  • I removed the privacy cover in hatch completely.
  • The 2nd row seats appear to be solid when pushing against them but this is also possibly a suspect.
  • I have trunk OEM rubber mat, and I have placed felt on the bottom of the mat.

Oh God. The dreaded mystery noise.

I will note that when I start my car up, it does make a hollow rattle noise almost like it’s coming from the exhaust. But it disappears within a couple seconds.

I have a similar noise coming from … I usually adjust the stops too ensure they’re not too loose or too tight. I’ve used electric tape on the latches.

The adjustments to the stops seem to work temporarily but the noise seems to always return.

Dealer has looked at it several times …

Drink some calming tea and crank up the stereo.
Because, unfortunately 9 out of 10, the service guys won't even be able to replicate or hear the noise. Even if they did, still over 90% chance that it won't be solved. I had a slight rattle in the back of my F15 and the car visited two different dealers four times - once staying there for 3 days- and they applied felt, checked all trim pieces, fixed the rear seat, adjusted the hatch, etc. etc. The noise always came back. I tried myself every suggestion on this forum and online, yet I could still hear it.
Then, I turned to Harmann Kardon, and cranked up the volume!
I hope for you that it gets solved though! Fingers crossed.

Had the same noise. Flip your rear seats and put electrical tape around the metal latches. Been dead silence ever since. Not a single rattle in the car.

Yet, if the vehicle was no longer under warranty, the dealer would find the problem in 5 minutes?

Stumbled across this thread. So I guess I was not imagining it.
Picked up on the rattle a few times. I turned the volume down each time to pinpoint it. It's somewhere in the rear - aft' left I hear it.
Loud enough for me to hear the rattle even with radio on...

A mechanic online tore a car half apart looking for a similar noise. Turned out to be a marble in the ashtray.

So, I have been noticing these noises possibly since I picked up the vehicle. I will add symptoms…sounds appear to be stronger when the vehicle is “cold” meaning 60-70F. Can “disappear” when warms up. Not noticeable at higher speed cruise. Vaguely relates to road conditions but lots of lag. I suspected fuel sloshing but I believe the tank is at the rear. More pronounced at driver position but passenger can hear it. I have hesitated to challenge my dealers…think about our symptoms. Nightmare diagnosis. My concern has mostly been safety but it is annoying. I am going to look into rear seat latches as suggested by one poster. It has to be something that is heavy and barely loose.

If the G05 is anything like previous iterations of the X5, then it could well be the trunk guidance stops. The trick there is to put some regular electrical tape over them as someone already said. My experience over the years has being unless there is a SIB on the specific issue, you are better off trying to troubleshoot the noise yourself.
