Review: BMW BBK for G05 X5
Wanted to share a BBK success story...
We have a 2020 X5 40i with third row. This comes with the 374x36 larger front brakes. As soon as we got the car my wife commented on how much harder this X5 is to slow down than our outgoing 2012 X5D (with EBC yellowstuff pads), and the pads squealed like heck. I swapped in some Hawk HP Plus pads and the pedal pressure improved a little, but they still squealed like crazy. Tried all sorts of stuff to minimize the sound, but nothing helped. I came across board member dentprotony@gmail.com's post about his F90 M5 BBK retrofit offering and gave it shot. The kit uses F90/95 M5 calipers, F90 M5 rotors, hoses, pads and a custom adapter that Tony provides. Other than the adapters and pads, everything is BMW. Installation was a breeze as all the hardware fit perfectly. The only catch was the lack of a functional rotor screw holding the rotor to the hub, but that was no big deal. The F90 M5 rotors are HUGE compared to the X5 rotors. I opted for EBC redstuff pads to install with the kit. The results are excellent. Pedal pressure seems like it requires less effort. Plenty of bite from the pads, and best of all- no more brake noises. Braking now does require more careful modulation as the front brakes will easily outperforms the tires. These easily fit underneath a set of 20in aftermarket wheels. Our X5 is truly used as an sport "activity" vehicle utilized as a daily driver, track toy tow vehicle, bicycle transport, and even a snow plow. Photos attached. Sorry about the dirty wheels. Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with Tony (user: dentprotony@gmail.com), other than being a satisfied customer. |

It's a great set-up. Brake performance is excellent and no more squealing, even with the use of hotter pads. They've been holding up incredibly well. I had to tow the track car with a wonky brake controller one weekend, and the X5 didn't flinch with this new brake setup. Previously, stopping distance was materially affected if the trailer brakes weren't operational.
Will plan for rears in the future, Thanks for the offer. |
