Because they are switching platforms and the new X7 will be built on the same platform. They can switch the whole Spartanburg factory over to the new platform.

Did I start a trend by drawing comparisons between Kia and BMW's new kidney grille designs? Seems like everyone is jumping on the bandwagon now and maybe taking it a bit too far by posting pics of Jeeps and Kias in this thread. Sorry folks, a white strip in the middle of the tail light does not automatically make this new X5 preview look like a Jeep...

You are correct.

Tail lights don't have the same shape or even white/red color pattern.

Round vs. square exhaust pipes

Square vs. round wheel arches

Shifting body line vs. straight line on the Jeep

Not even close other than the classic SUV silhouette shape and maaaybe the rear spoiler.

Nice try to the haters though!

The headlight design, like the new X3, is ugly to me. The sharp angular shape doesn't compliment the grill well, it clashes.

I like everything else, well maybe not the tail lights. Maybe it's just being resistant to change.

Nah. It is a warmed over E70 but it's still best in class alongside the new Q7. It's a strong seller and good overall SUV despite not driving as well as the first couple X5s.

Considering the X3 came about four years after the X5, I'd wager not.
You realize one can be designed to look like the other. It matters not which one came out first

I think the similarities between the X3 and x5 have always been there regardless of where each is in lifecycle.

Battery location for X5 40e

The G-series platform for the X3 was designed for an all-electric version with under-floor battery (revealed in China show). I would presume that the PHEV version of the X3 would also use some of this under floor space. How about the new X5 40e. Will it use an underfloor battery or continue to intrude on the trunk space as in the current model?

Based on the above.. I think the G chassis looks very close to each other than any other chassis.

It has F chassis code, go figure.
BMW pretty "F"ed up all F chassis cars and they do not ride well.

with the x5 currently I have seen some not so flattering images that make the car look a little off however in person and on the road they look awesome. I am going to wait to judge till I see this new one in person as I feel it could be the same case for me personally.

Remember this is a render by a website, of course it's going to take features that you can see from spy shots and features from the X3

But you can clearly see resemblance....which is my entire point to begin with

I believe that is the main reason, but I also believe the fact the new Q7 is such a strong competitor, the RRS was refreshed this year AND the new ML will be out in 2019 are also compelling reasons for them to release a new X5.

While I think the outside of the current X5 looks great, the inside (at least to me) feels a little dated. Not that it isn't still nice, but when you sit in a new Q7, there is definitely room to improve the interior.
