Not driving enough this last year to do two drains in a year so I figured this was a good compromise. I've bounced around to a bunch of different specs, TPT used to be 5W-30 when my car first came out, now it's 0W-30 which seems pretty good as well.

Overall imo just another liquimoly offering, aka over priced for average if not a bit sub par oil compared to the competition. Imo with liquimoly you're paying for the name and nothing else. It's just like imo escort and the radar detector industry just paying for the name while performance lacks behind cheaper competition (except their new redline 360c it's actually decent), and essentially escort just has larger margins so retailers really love selling their products. You're better off with a different LL01 oil like motul xcess gen 2 5w40 - has to be gen 2, gen 1 wasn't good. Or my personal favorite pennzoil platinum euro 5w40 which offers similar specs to motul at a fraction of the price of both the motul and liquimoly offerings.

You think I need to flush it out? I don't drive during winter, stick with 5w40? Money aside what's your recommendation for a better oil than Pennzoil??

Since they are both 40 weights you shouldn't need to flush it out, but if you can get it as cheap as I can here in Canada then do 2 oil changes that year after some driving between. Where do you live and what are the winter temps? But if you don't drive in the winter then it is fine to stick with 5w40 all year around so long as you don't drive the car below the oil's pour point (which shouldn't occur if you don't drive in the winter). For example it can get as cold as -35ºC here (some times to -40ºC) where I live and since I don't drive it in the winter I have no issues using this oil all year round. If money was no object there would still be a few situations: 1) You want an LL01: then it would still be between pennzoil platnium euro 5w40 or motul xcess gen 2 5w40 and depending on which one has a better VOA result I would pick that one. The motul is so new there are no VOA's yet and same for the new reformulated pennzoil. 2) If you wanted a track oil (i.e. your car is making alot of power + your oil temps are near (aka a couple of degrees) limp mode at all times and UOA says your car is showing alot of wear metals due to high temperature sheering) and did not care about LL01 certifications then redline 5w40. Otherwise there is no need for a track oil on the street. 3) If you really like burning money for no reason motul 300v. edit- I just looked at motul 300v's specs and the HTHS rating is still less than redline's 5w40 and TBN is low due to its intended use for short distance sprint racing (I think OCI is pretty short as a result). What makes it worth it is its ester core base stock (so it has superior heat resistance before getting damaged) and its advertised ability to withstand fuel dilution. I believe it also has really low friction too so you will get easier start ups and less parasitic power loss. The con is high ZDDP and phosphorous so if you have a cat that thing is toast. Also the price tag, and since it is a racing oil and not LL01 I have no idea how well this thing will play long term daily driven.

Hi F87, Apparently the Shell Helix 5w40 before that had the LL01 rating is no longer available.
Now it's only 0/40 and it doesn't include on it's list BMW LL01. Your thoughts? https://www.shell.com.ph/motorists/o...tra-0w-40.html . |

I don't know too much about shell helix ultra so no comment on 0w40. Try to look for motul xcess gen 2 5w40.

Locally only I believe. they discontinued carrying the 5/40 and replaced it w/ the 0/40.... unfortunately the 5/40 was the one with the LL01 rating. This 0/40 does not.

Ok what I suggest to do is look for the motul xcess gen 2 5w40 thats your next best bet. If not then go for the bmw twin power turbo 0w30 oil if it is cheap. Alternatives which imo are a tier lower is valvoline european (find one that has the LL01 spec and iirc it was the 5w40 variant). If you can't find any of that your other choice would be looking at a non LL01 oil or look at any other ll01 oil available and compare the two and pick the best one. If you want better advice than what I can give you, then you should head to Bob its the oil guy, those people know so much more about oil than I ever could. I just know enough to pick a good oil that will best protect my engine for my use case (summer street use and track), otherwise I don't know too much about the other oils that are available outside of North America (Ravenol, ineos, etc).

PSA: Pennzoil Euro 5w40 is on monthly special at NAPA for $6.09 per qt. Not only the cheapest I've seen by a good margin, that is per bottle so you don't have to buy cases of 6. Local store to me didn't have many in stock but call and they can get as many as you want same day.

For any Canadians here, Canadian tire does 45% off sales every couple of weeks rotating through every oil brand they carry, so that would result in oil prices of $6.60/L when buying the 5L jugs. Canadian tire also does 50%-55% off on black fridays resulting in $6.00/L (50% off) or $5.40/L (55% off). So those are the best times of the year to buy oil. Also I contacted pennzoil and the shelf life of unopened or opened oil was 5 years so it is ok to stock up on alot of oil.

Or just stick with the bmw twin power turbo 0w30 if you can't get anything else for cheap.

One clarification here about LL01 (and LL04):
IN 2018 BMW updated all of their LL oil approvals. LL01 and LL04 also got N20 engine test aiming requirements at timing chain issues. Ixidation levels are moved from ridiculous (BMW has toughest oxidation requirements) to seriously ridiculous. That is problem for blenders. It is really tough to blend 0W30 or 0W40 oils with HTHS above 3.5cp and fit into BMW oxidation requirements. These oxidation requirements eliminated most M1 oils (actually I think all of them) as M1 uses Esters in their premium products. For people that drive M2, new LL 01 requirements are not necessary as MB229.5 is more comprehensive approval and oxidation requirement is in line with older BMW requirements. So, look for oils with MB 229.5. MB229.5 has a tougher Noack standard (10%, BMW LL01 and LL04 are 13%), deposit requirements, wear requirements. People who track M2. Look for Porsche A40. Unless you are buying track dedicated oil like Motul1 5W40 Sport, go with oils that have Porsche A40 approval (not recommended for as that is not approval). Porsche A40 (and C40) simulate 5 or 8hrs (forgot) track time on Nurburgring: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ny9xl7iWayU&t=42s |

Well, the romance with Shell didn't last long. Castrol is back in the saddle.

I see lots of 5w-40 oils being used, but none of them are Castrol Edge. I was going to use 0w-40 Castrol Edge, but it didn't have LL-01 approval. However, the 5w-40 Castrol Edge does have LL-01 and MB229.5. I know it really doesn't matter if my OCI will be 5k or less.
I will be trying out the Castrol Edge 5w-40 and seeing how it does in the S55for maybe 3k miles and then switching to 0w-40 if need be. What are some people's take on this? |

Read above why LL01 for Castrol edge 0w40 isn't needed for the s55. However for me personally I always look for LL01.

but even the updated 5w-40 Castrol Edge is still inferior to 0w-40? I really can't find any up to date information about this.

If you want LL01 my choices are Pennzoil platinum euro 5w40 (I personally run this oil) or motul xcess gen 2 5w40 (the motul costs more but based on the voa and specs it looks a bit better than the Pennzoil).
