MY 2020 vs 2021 X5MCs
I've been lucky enough to drive both for extended periods of time and I wanted to get others opinions about the topic.
I feel that the MY 2020 is "faster" than the MY 2021. Noticeably so in just regular "efficient" mode, in "daily" type driving. The 2020 also has louder and more aggressive exhaust sounds. The 2020 also feels more sensitive to throttle response. This makes the MY2021 feel "detuned". My car is in service currently and I let them know about this but they don't have a MY2020 on the lot to do a side by side comparison, so I doubt they will find anything wrong and just brush this issue aside. Anyone else experience this? I know that the quality control at BMW is not what it used to be but this is a little upsetting considering the premium paid for this type of car.

How many miles on the '21? Sounds to me like maybe the car just hasn't fully settled in yet.
I seriously doubt that BMW would alter the tune from '20 to '21. With all the automation in manufacturing now, I doubt that your car is out of spec.

Why exactly is that the lazy answer? Perhaps it's true.

Because they didn't drive it side by side with the 2020.

You are comparing a car that hadn't even gotten the run in service done yet? Have some patience.

Are you absolutely sure about this? My service advisor told me once the break-in service is done more performance or more HP is unlocked. He said full potential isn't available until the break-in service is completed. I've been trying to verify this.

Myth. You aren’t going to find “proof” either proving or disproving this unfortunately but things I’ve read in the past says there is no power difference because of some dealer software done at break in.

There is no additional power unlocked with the run in service. I know for a fact from an email exchange with a BMW Technical Engineer with BMW NA.

I'm hoping it's a "placebo effect". I really do. Which is why I'm asking if anyone else has the experience of driving both model years side by side. Take for example just hitting the accelerator half way a bit to get up to 45-50MPH (non aggressively). I distinctly remember the 2020 giving me more exhaust sounds. Now, my 2021 is absolutely quiet. Both with the sport exhaust turned on. I'm not saying your wrong, nor am I trying to argue with you or anyone else here. I just wanted someone to give me their thoughts if they have driven both model years side by side.

I have heard some people say the exhaust on the '21 actually is quieter than the '20. I don't think there is a performance difference, but a quieter exhaust can definitely seem that way.
