Stepped in gasoline in gas station now smells on driver carpet *advice*

I stepped in a gasoline spill on floor and then it trailed back to my car carpet mat . I quicjly took mat and wiped it with a towel... not wet but the smell is still there..... i took it out the car for the night... will dealer order me a new mat if i ask them? Or is there a way to save this mat?

Any advice? 2021 x6

1:1:1 Baking soda, vinegar and hot water. Depending on how bad the contamination... spray bottle, soak, or wash with the mixture then blot/air dry.

A good cleaning and maybe a spray of Fabreeze...it's not a warranty issue, but certainly, BMW would sell you new mats if you wanted them!

FWIW, I got some clothes soaked in gasoline (plane accident), and it took numerous cycles through the washing machine to get the smell out...so, a less than rigorous scrub may not do it for your mats. Eventually, all of the aromatics will out gas on their own, but it can take awhile.

Neutralize the area were the mat was contaminated. Leave the mat out of the vehicle to air out and dry. Use coffee grinds in a stocking or bag overnight inside the vehicle. Should absorb majority of the odor on the first night; if not repeat with coffee grinds until odor has dissipated.

Another option is Activated Charcoal. If carpet is dark colored then generously sprinkle over and vacuum out after a couple of hours settle time.

Best advice secondary to cleaning carpet is all-weather mats - foam, dry, reinstall....

Hunters scent away works best for to get rid of fuel smells. Baking soda is also a home remedy. I am a long time bow hunter and found it works on about any odor.

Not 100% sure; but I'd probably try to use a strong soap, like the original blue dawn dishwashing soap. I believe gasoline is a non polar solvent. Washing it with an aqueous solution (polar solution), without any modifiers, would probably not be very effective. Mixing vinegar, baking soda, and water would basically just yield a sodium acetate salt solution.

Different size? Different than what...the original driver's side mat or the front passenger mat? Do we assume that you've already thrown the original mat away...as to why you need a pic? If not...just compare the old to the new.

BMW G05 X5 floor mats:
  • 1st Pic/carpeted mats for: 1st row/2nd row/3rd row
  • 2nd Pic/All-Weather mats for: 1st row/2nd row

They are carpet rugs that came with the car .. however, I added a plastic wrap around them for protection

The mats are there as sacrificial items to protect your carpets. If you plastic coat them then the mud/water/etc. just rolls off and soils the surrounding carpet. Weathertech and other winter mats have raised lips and channels to trap the water vs. letting it roll off.

While I totally agree with your opinion.. mine is just there for soft protection.. as we do not get any snow here ... neither heavy rain.. it's mostly dust and harsh desert weather .. I do tend to change the wrapping every year and a half as they tend to last for some time.. my 2 cents opinion
