Phone as key

I know the current X5's come with a digital key card, but am I correct that there is also a feature that enables phone as a key?

I believe that's the case but Samsung phones only due to NFC chip limitations on iOS devices (I think).

I was told by a BMW Genius it's currently for Android phones only.

Edit: sounds like it is even more specific than that, not even all androids..

The X5 comes with a one year subscription to the digital key function. Currently that is only available on certain Android phones but hopefully iPhones will be able to be used since Apple opened up the NFC on them.

it will only work with Samsung S9 and up or Samsung notes...

if you have Verizon your screwed.. Next time buy a unlocked version from Samsung then put a Verizon sin in it, NOT a phone for Verizon from Samsung.

Oh it looked like what I saw was something else, called "digital key for 5" where it's for sharing (like let your friend drive your car without you being present). Also it was for some European country. Not sure if this is a different version.

Yeah, hopefully BMW adds Apple soon given that Apple opened up NFC. I was hoping BMW would add it soon after the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) announced Digital Key 2.0 in the late fall but still no news from BMW on adding iPhones.

It’s pretty cool that the 2.0 technology works to unlock/start the car even if the phone has a dead battery.

Thanks guys. I have a Samsung Galaxy S10+ unlocked with Cricket service, so looks like I would qualify. But it's a paid subscription?? Got to be kidding! BMW never stops looking for ways to soak it's customers. I read that the Lincoln Aviator has it standard no charge. How can this cost BMW anything??

Edit: Just found a BMW article on it. One year is included on new vehicles.

it is a paid service but I believe the first 2 years or something is free and automatically active.

Looks like 1 year free, then $88/year.

I know it says select carriers, but is it safe to assume the CDMA carriers are a no go? I saw Verizon was mentioned.

I have used the digital key for a year now and it works! It's only Samsung that support this function according to their Web page.

Thanks, I see it is $20 year. Still don't understand why they need to charge anything. It cost them nothing. Lincoln is offering the service in the new Aviator no charge. Didn't BMW learn anything from the apple carplay fiasco?

from what I understand is the phone is capable, but when you select a phone "For Verizon" vs a Carrier Unlocked is that the phone is linked to Verizon firmware and within that Verizon made software is the problem.

At first I did not think I would use this feature at all but when working out or going to the park I don't need to bring a set of keys so I can avoid losing them. My phone was even dead and it opened the car. I guess the credit card key does the same thing but I always have my phone with me so I like the convenience. I may extend for 1 year in April.

Thanks. I feel like there's so much info floating around out there regarding the requirements. I know for iPhones, they claim they do not lock or that it's only temporary. I know there's always a fuss with CDMA and GSM...I ran into it when I tried to activate my eSIM as a GSM. It's a bunch of BS that the carriers do it in the name of security...yet between the robocalls/spam and the SIM swapping (scary stuff)...I don't believe a word.

From Verizon

Device Unlocking Policies

In order to mitigate theft and other fraudulent activity, newly purchased devices are “locked” to work exclusively on the Verizon network. We have separate device unlocking policies that cover postpay and prepaid devices, as well as special rules for deployed military personnel.

“Unlocking” a device refers only to disabling software that would prevent a consumer from attempting to activate a device designed for one carrier’s network on another carrier’s network. Due to differing technologies, an unlocked Verizon Wireless device may not work – or may experience limited functionality – on another carrier’s network.

Postpay Device Unlocking Policy
Devices that you purchase from Verizon are locked for 60 days after purchase. Devices that you purchase from our retail partners are locked for 60 days after activation. After 60 days, we will automatically remove the lock. Following the 60 day lock period, we do not lock our phones at any time.

Prepaid Device Unlocking Policy
Devices that you purchase from Verizon and certain devices purchased from our retail partners are locked for 60 days after activation. After 60 days, we will automatically remove the lock. Following the 60 day lock period following device purchase, we do not lock our phones at any time.

If you purchase a 4G Phone-in-a-Box from our retail partners, you should review the back of the box to determine the lock period applicable to that device.

Unlocking Policy for Deployed Military Personnel
If you are a Verizon Wireless customer in the military and receive relocation orders outside of the Verizon Coverage Area, we will unlock your device at your request, even during the 60-day-lock period following the purchase of your device.

I got my car delivery today.
Opened up my iPhone app for BMW connected and under history there is a Digital Key menu.
Clicked it and Activated Digital Key (needed both keys in the car)

My iPhone is now my car key if I place it on door handle it opens and on nfc tray to start the car.

My vehicle operates with my iPhone as a key and my apple watch as a key. It does not yet operate with Samsung S8. I do not see that option in Samsung deice.

Digital keys for now are only Apple devices. I think support for Android digital keys ended with 07/2020 but I'm sure someone will correct if that is wrong.
