Quick question: does kick-to-open trunk work without unlocking the car when using the digital key?

Figured. Huge draw back for me personally. Was really looking forward to using the digital key. Bummer.

The FOB uses a radio signal (and NFC if the battery is dead to start it), while the phone only uses the NFC, and I don't think that there's a NFC receiver on the hatch.

I am fairly certain that you need at least an IPhone 12 for this work with an Apple device. It does not work with an IphoneX. (Or at least I cannot get it to work with my IPhone X.

Does the car come with a back up "key card"? This is what I have on my Tesla and it's very easy to carry in my wallet as a backup if something should happen to my phone as key. Of course, this is only the backup-backup since I can remotely unlock the car and allow myself to drive it using the app on my phone.

I can't imagine carrying a fob around every day any more. Nice to see this technology starting to get out.

Yes, it comes with a credit card sized digital key card.

I haven't heard it was discontinued but it was standard with comfort access starting shortly after the G05 was introduced.

Check the pouch that stores the owners manual. Sometimes they keep the key card there. If it is missing then contact your dealership. You can also buy one, part number is 61359436659.

MY 2021 also supports the digital key known as Apple Car Key. Apple devices prior to the iPhone XR introduced in September 2018 are not supported. Details here:

http://www.bmw.com/digitalkey

I have an older iPhone with wallet style phone-case and I use this trick Jay showed us:

When you use your Apple Watch, how are you starting the vehicle?

I know with the phone, it has to be placed into the tray. I can't imagine the same with the watch

Move the wrist that has the watch on close to the tray and press the start button. That's how I have been operating the vehicle with the watch. Works flawlessly. I do have to manually login into my profile though after the vehicle turns on.

And here is how I'm doing it (Samsung S9+):

First video shows me locking and unlocking the vehicle with the Key Card integrated into my phone-case:

https://youtu.be/svsqZYmgoIc

Second video shows the starting of the engine. First attempt is with phone off the charging-cradle which certainly does not work (I just wanted to demonstrate that I did not have a regular vehicle key on me). Then, I placed the phone on the cradle and it worked. FYI, the phone was off the entire time.

https://youtu.be/siurcYZE7LM

This image shows how thick the case is and that the Key Card is actually located under a little stand. I marked the spot where you can actually see the location of the black Key Card with red arrows and a line. You can see the black card on the blue phone:

Have anyone tried using Apple watch or iPhone with digital key by holding it against the key markings on the side of the steering column?

This method is used when the battery inside the key fob is dead. This should allow driver to start the vehicle by pressing the start/stop button within 10 seconds, even when the key fob is battery is dead. I am not sure if BMW use RFID or NFC on the steering column. These are the steps for key fob with dead battery:

1. Hold the back of the vehicle key against the marked area on the steering column.

2. Check the instrument cluster. If the vehicle key is detected switch on drive-ready state by pressing start/stop button within 10 seconds.

3. If the vehicle key is not recognized, slightly change the position of the vehicle key and repeat the procedure.

That's fantastic. Really a mild inconvenience to never have to carry a key fob.

I'm officially down to carrying zero keys

Can you not connect the Apple Watch digital key with your profile? I presume the watch just piggyback on the iPhone? Or does it need a digital key on its own?

I connected my physical key card with my profile and it recognizes me every time I open the door and start the X5. I am only using the key card now until I get a digital key compatible iPhone and Apple Watch.
