Battery charging

Forgive me folks for reposting it at few different threads, including here at the main thread. Trying to get some quick attention from experienced members.

The charging status is sitting at stage three for roughly eighteen hours now. What should I do .. leave it on or should I disconnect?

I have an MY2021 X5 XDrive 40i, took delivery about two and a half weeks back with just four miles on it. Have about 600 miles on it now.
Reading through the forums I figured I need to top off the battery once in a while, and I bought a BMW charger, which I think is a rebranded CTEK charger.

I plugged in the charger, connected the terminals under the hood. It switched from stage 1 to stage 3 in about 30 minutes, but it has been sitting on stage three for roughly 18 hours now. Should it take this long? Hope I did not do anything wrong. The car is in the garage, and the temperature is in the 60s. After connecting the terminals, I gently closed the hood (not all the way), and locked the car using the key fob. Hope the locking is not disrupting anything.

Did I induce a problem in an otherwise fully functional vehicle?

Continued from my post above - After roughly 19 hours on charge showing status at stage 3, I decided to unlock the vehicle. Once I the display came alive I had the message (in the pic.). This message never appeared before. Seems my charging effort did something else and triggered this message.

I kept the mode on Normal, because in the manual it says Normal includes AGM as well. Not sure what to do.

It _could_ be because the hood wasn't closed all the way. And the car not sleeping properly makes it consume more power so the battery didn't become full.

Is the X5 also plugged into an EVSE? The onboard electronics will try to recharge the 12vdc battery as well as the trickle charger trying, might trigger an error message.

Unplug your trickle charge from the wall and plugged it again after 5 minutes.

@[biterror] - that's my suspicion too, wondering what's the right way to charge - I think I need to figure out a way to close the hood completely during the charge. Thanks for the insight though, truly appreciated.

@jad03060 no EVSE option.

edtreo I will attempt again tonight. I should leave charger mode at Normal car option, not Li-Ion .. right?

Yes. That looks like a CTEK charger which have that issue if not reset properly.

If it helps, please drop us an update. I have the same BMW charger and I'm also getting an X5 delivery next month. Would love to know the right way to do this if it gets resolved.

Thanks!

My X5 was built in early November and I took delivery at the end of November. I placed a NOCO Genius 5 smart charger on it and it took about 14 hours to go to the full solid green light. Meaning fully charged. Getting acquainted with the new car, I have spent a lot of time setting the car up, etc. Since then, it sometimes only takes an hour to be fully charged. Other times, it takes 12-18 hours.
I always charge it in the garage, hood open, doors unlocked.
So I don't think your car should be throwing out a warning like you show for having the hood open and doors unlocked, but who knows. The only warning I get is that the hood is open. My car has a 105 amp main battery in rear and a 60 amp auxiliary battery under hood.

Ok, I connected the charger again to the terminals under the hood. Opted the same mode as before, Normal (Car). Found a tiny slot on the right front of the hood at the end of the gasket, using that slot to run the charger cable out. Closed the hood, vehicle recognized total hood closure, locked the car. Made sure no warning messages regarding door/hood still open. Plugged the charger into the wall outlet.

Begin time 28 Dec. 10:23 PM CST.

Charging status switched to stage three within a minute. Will keep posting updates. This is a learning curb that I needed to go through. Thanks for all your help and support.

same end result, not sure what I am doing wrong

I checked this morning, after about 10 hours of charge status sitting on stage 3, I unlocked the vehicle and found the Battery Management message on the display. I have unplugged the charger for now.

anyone any thoughts ????

All I can't think of is try another AGM charger? At least that should confirm one way or another the suitability of you CTEK unit.

You were not getting the check control message when not charging the battery? And you're using the starting assistance battery terminals under the hood?

Just fyi. I have a 2021 X5 40i picked up about 3 weeks ago. I have a ctek charger and i am having the exact same issue. Would love to determine what is going on. Maybe because of the 48 volt mild hybrid system?

I think I have a clue, at least a hint of a clue. Trying it now, will update how it goes, so far it's looking positive.

What I am trying now -
Connected the cables under the hood terminals, ran the charger cable through a side slot out of the hood, and gently lowered the hood, did not close it completely. DID NOT LOCK THE VEHICLE.

The charging status is at stage three with no check control message "yet".

What I had observed in my previous attempts was - the check control message would appear the moment charging status will get to stage 3.

What I was doing in my previous failed attempts -
Attempt 1 - Connected the terminals under the hood, left the hood open, LOCKED THE VEHICLE.

Attempt 2 - Connected the cables under the hood, run the charger cable through a side slot out of the hood, and closed the hood completely. LOCKED THE VEHICLE.

Apparently, mild hybrid vehicles, like mine, need to be charged with the hood open (page 394 of the user manual). I had tried with the hood open earlier but was locking the vehicle and that was somehow triggering conflict.

Update -

Almost at the three hours mark at stage three, still looking good. No check control message about Battery Management. Hope it is doing what it needs to do internally. Have no way to tell if the battery is getting pumped up or not.

Yes, that what happened.

It does take a while depending on the capacity of the charger. It may take > 1 day.

I think that the battery used is in the range of 8-900Ahrs. I think that charger is in the 3Ah range. It could take a long time to reach full charge, depending on where it started from. Not positive on the size of the onboard alternator, but think it's in the order of a 200A unit, but it doesn't run all of the time.

Just curious why you locked the doors? I thought I read you were parked in a garage. I’m assuming it’s your home’s garage...is that incorrect and you’re parked in a public garage used by others?

Not that I think it would stop the car from charging...but when you lock the car, you have systems initiated...like the alarm siren system which would also include tilt sensors. So the car has at least those systems powered up vs if you left the vehicle unlocked. Just a thought.
