Lower Tailgate not working right since OTA Software Update

We finally got our first OTA software update on our 2019 X5 in November (dealer had done a number of them onsite to deal with iDrive issues).

Since then, the functioning of the lower tailgate has been very quirky and getting progressively worse. It will open fine, from a button or kick, but most of the time when the gates start to close, the lower gate stumbles and everything reopens. Now I can barely get the power close on the lower gate to work at all. I’ve turned it opening off entirely now.

I’m taking it into the dealer next week, but it definitely seemed to coincide with the update, the release notes for which indicates changes to how the tailgate functions.

Anyone else seeing this?

Not me. Tailgate has been working fine. The behaviour you're describing sounds, to me, like the lifters have some mechanical problem.

I did wonder if the rubber strips that raise up on the floor of the bootspace (part of the Luggage Compartment Package) had stopped working after the 07/2020 OTA update. Some acrobatics through the rear door confirmed it was just my imagination. I must have been carrying so exceptionally slippy cargo.

Try rebooting iDrive and see if there is a difference. It likely is a mechanical issue that just happen to appear around the time of the OTA.

I also had a similar issue, but in my case the issue was with opening. Dealer had it for a while, ran diagnostic codes, and re-initialized the system. That seemed to work for a while, then the problem came back. I just deal with it at this point. Also, see the link to my thread discussing the issue.

Yes, still under warranty. It's going in Monday. Just seemed odd that it so closely coincided with the software update.

How did this get fixed? I was just told of a recall for the spindle drive on my US MY21 X5 45e.
