BMW X5 - 22 CPO or 23 non-CPO?

Hi all, I'm looking to upgrade my existing X3 to an X5 due to an increase in family size. My budget is around $50,000, and I've narrowed my options down to the following two cars:

2023 used, 29,251 miles($49,998): https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/invent...ting=369290786

2022 CPO, 30,442 miles($47,944): https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/invent...ting=368587670

They both used as rental cars before with similar price and milles them, and their warranty will expire in the same year(2027). Any advice on which one is a better buy? Or should I avoid them altogether because they were used as rentals? Thanks!

I don't know about the CPO vs non-CPO difference (whether that worth the price difference).
But the 2023 one has premium and parking assistance package while 2022 doesn't.

Welcome to the forum. I would skip both since they were rental cars but that is something only you can decide. If that didn't bother me then I would skip both because they don't have the Driving Assistance Professional package but again you need to decide if that is important.

If you haven't already, I would make a list of features and options that are important to you and then try and match those up to the vehicles that are available. I would hate to see you upgrade to an X5 and then not have adaptive cruise should that be something that you would want to use.

Good luck with your search.

I agree with turtleboy, not having DAP is a deal breaker, and I wouldn't own another ex rental car.

That said, if you're upgrading from X3 due to family size increase.. skip x5 and go right to x7. You're never gonna say "wow I wish I had less space"..X5 is pretty tight to take my.family of 4 (with 2 toddlers) anywhere

Well, x7 may or may not be the right choice, depending on multi factors, like the budget you have, your real space needs.

I have a family of 4, and we used to have a X5 and are looking for upgrade to a x7. However, after test drive, my wife settled on a loaded X5 instead X7. My wife simply thinks the space of X5 is good enough for us, and she doesn't want a larger one (hard to park etc). Price is not a concern at that time (we paid over $100k for the 50e).

Thank you all for the kind replies! Yeah rental car is big red flag. Just curious why not having DAP is a deal breaker?

Btw,found this CPO X5 which is not a rental car, but not sure if can make it to $50k: https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/link/374861541

I think the features of DAP work very well and provide a safer, less stressful and more relaxing driving experience. I use it as close to 100% of the time Im driving on all different road types and could never picture me having a vehicle without it.

This is all true. Viewed another way, it's standard equipment on a Lexus or even a base Toyota, and so not having it on a BMW is a joke, and you're getting more equipment and safety features out of a base economy car.

That's a nice car. I doubt they're gonna drop it to 50k, it's far nicer than the other two you posted at just under 50k.

The 5k difference is negligible in reality. You could spend that at the first issue they determine is due to insufficient upkeep and abuse by a rental company.

OP - DAP is great but I’m guessing you don’t have it now on the x3 so maybe you won’t miss it so much . As TurtleBoy said before - make a list of features that matter to you. DAP is a must have for many on this forum but certainly not all, read up on it, maybe you will prioritize other features.

It would depend on how often you use cruise control. Before my X5, maybe I used cruise control 20-30% of the time, more than likely im on the interstate or maybe an empty street. I do it just so I can relax my legs a little bit. But i turn it off and takeover as soon as there is traffic in front of me. But with DAP, I try to use my cruise control every chance I get. What is the difference? First mode, It keeps the distance with the car in front. They slow down, i slow down automatically. They speed up, i speed up automatically (until my set limit). Second mode keeps mode 1 feature but adds lane centering so i dont have to keep doing micro adjustments to stay in my lane.

Just what BlkGS said, it really should be standard by now, specially at this price.

Thanks for the very helpful information, guys! My current X3 doesn't have DAP, but it seems to be a pretty convenient feature, especially since I often drive between Seattle and Vancouver, Canada.
So the car I shared above (https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/link/374861541) seems really good, with DAP and low mileage. I checked its value on KBB and Carvana with same packages, and they suggested ~$45K-$47K while the listed price is $55K. It's my first time purchasing pre owned cars - can I really trust the KBB/Carvana numbers?

Yes, those are actual numbers based on sales but may not have anything to do with the price of any individual vehicle. That all depends on the vehicle, the seller and the local market. Some people/dealers will hold out for top dollar even if it takes them months to sell. What a buyer must decide is what is that vehicle worth to them and then not pay more than that amount.

Offer them your $50k and see what they say. Keep in mind that historically the PNW has the lowest discounts on new BMWs in the entire country so that will likely carry over to used vehicles at dealers.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Gotcha, thanks! Will start with $50K with them and see how it goes.

Keep in mind, KBB doesn't account for condition or demand very well, and while it takes sales.prices into account somewhat, ever since COVID, KBB has seriously lagged on values. I would trust the cargurus number a bit more than KBB, but all of these are just tools to convince you that your trade is worth less and your purchase vehicle is worth more.

KBB also largely works off average values and best fit depreciation. So it tries to adjust desirable spec cars tomfitnin line with the vast numbers of basic lease spec cars.

In the end, what matters most is what they're into the vehicle for. An off lease car will often times have cost them less to acquire than a private purchase vehicle. Those rental cars will cost even less still.

Trying $50k is worth a try, but I'd expect to be disappointed, that one is definitely at least 5k better than the two ex rental cars.

Just to be clear, are these off lease cars or were they actually in a rent a car fleet?
My vote goes to #3. You may very well get it for less than $55.5 but likely not @ $50k. It had DAP which is a must IMO.
