Hazard Button Lights Up

Recently I noticed the light on the hazard warning system button in the center of the console lights (red triangles) up for 3 to 4 seconds when I touch any of the four exterior door handles. After 3 or 4 seconds the light turns off. If I touch the door handle again it once again illuminates.

The 2021 X5 is locked; the red alarm light under the rear view mirror is flashing every two seconds. I do not have a key with me nor is the key in range to unlock the doors. The external hazard lights do not activate (flash). Only the button light is turned on.

I've found no information about this in the manual. Any insight about this "feature" would be appreciated.

BMWs for decades have specific lights turn on in the interior when the vehicle is awakened. This AWAKE state usually occurs when the door handles are initiated or a remote key lock/unlocks the doors etc…these are initiations that assumes that the car is being approached or about to be entered etc.

The haz button light illuminating is a sign that the something has activated things on this communication bus. IN the old E chassis BMWs…it was the P-bus that illuminated a little orange light next to the gear shift lever. ON your G chassis BMW…it is probably now the haz switch.

You can probably extrapolate this older tech info to your new G chassis…you may no longer have a “P-bus”…but the underlying communication architecture is probably the same:

my 2012 X5 today when I click to unlock alarm sounded with low sound then nothing happens. It will not unlock so opened with key , no dash lights or any lights were on except the hazard light button flashes and nothing turns on. Battery installed couple of weeks back. What should I check?
