Angry Polarized-like Lines on iDrive Display

I got my x5 g05 2022 version back in August. Everything was fine until I noticed some polarized-like parallel lines across my Drive display. In the attached picture, you can see those gray lines parallel to the red line I marked. I was wondering if anyone else's X5 is having the same issue? It is not obvious in the dark menu but very obvious when the background color is light (e.g., when using Google Maps). The only thing I did before noticing the lines was that I parked outdoors overnight in cold weather (-4 OC or 24.8 F).

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Many Thanks!

It is under warranty, let your dealer handle it.

Yeah, that's probably the best way to do it... I'm just afraid that they won't consider it under warranty...dealers always like to blame the buyers

I have the same, but they don't appear until I'm zoomed all the way in (+) using either Maps or Google Maps in CarPlay. Also, I have to have my face/eyes about 4-inches from the display to actually notice them. When I'm at a normal zoom level with Maps, and driving I can't even see them.

Does the line move (or float around) as you change your eyes position?

Sorry, I only see it when my face is physically a few inches from the display and I’m squinting to see it. So I don’t really notice it at all from a driving or riding seat position.

Ah I see. I will bring it to the dealer and see what they say. Thanks

I've never really encountered that mindset, but dealers are under strict guidelines from manufacturers to fix as little as possible under warranty, and 99% of dealers will do just that. They literally won't push for anything to get fixed or replaced unless it's hanging by a wire.

Why do you assume dealers are under STRICT guidelines from their manufacturer to fix as little as possible?

From owning Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge/Ram trucks, Audi, to BMW I've never had any issues with getting issues fixed under warranty. I had a center console cover replaced because it wouldn't stay closed under warranty whilst I had my '06 300 SRT8 with me in Germany in 2009.

Aside from my belief in that concept? I've known ex-dealer mechanics that verified that fact. I've had a very few things fixed under warranty over the last couple decades, but so many more things that were ignored. That's what lemon laws are for, and I've collected 4 times over the years.

Some of that depends on the local dealer management...BMW will pay for the update IF the repair is documented properly by the dealer. That paperwork can be somewhat complex, so they may tend to avoid doing it.

On the map display, keep in mind how the data is stored and your zoom level. There can be artifacts that only show up under higher magnification, just like zooming into a photo in an app that supports it. I'd be surprised if the data is stored as vectors...pixelation will have some artifacts at higher magnification.

Maps are stored as vectors. Storing the maps as images would require tremendous amounts of space. Areas of the map visible on the display are rendered into tiles in real time as needed, new tiles are rendred when the zoom level changes. So there should never be pixelation artifacts on maps.

The vector => bitmap rendering takes some computational power which is why moving and zooming maps is laggy on cheap phones, and on builtin navigation in most cheap cars which have underpowered processors. Even on higher end hardware you can still often see the tile boundaries as new tiles are rendered and displayed when moving around the map. Generally there's also a cache which rendered tiles get saved into, to speed up for future views of the same area of the map.

Satellite view can't be saved as vectors, online maps have to store that imagery and will directly serve the tiles to you. That's why when you move around google maps in satellite view you can see the new satellite imagery loading in many square patches - those are the tiles.

I believe it should be a hardware issue as opposed to maps pixel or the way data stored. Will bring to dealer for a check in

If you have any video(s) on a USB drive, while parked, try playing one to see if there are any lines.

Just came back from the dealer today. They agreed to replace a new display for me, but, apparently, the new display also has these gray lines on it. I also compared it with another x5 g05, which shows a similar issue. Thus, this is probably a universal thing with all the iDrive displays. It is annoying, but it is what it is...

Why would they agree to replace it if the new display will have the same lines?
