2024 x5 50e drivetrain and high voltage message

Hi All,

I'm getting the exact same messages, 45 days and 1200 miles after new car delivery. Restarted the vehicle and messages cleared. Deciding whether to take the vehicle to the dealer again.

We also had a yellow check engine light after 10 days. Took it to dealer, where they replaced a malfunctioning AC control valve which provides cooling for the high voltage battery.

Just received this error this morning. It popped up and then cleared itself as I entered the car. Car is an October build I am am 1200 miles from home.

Does this need to be addressed if it clears up like it did? I will be in this location for 5 weeks and then need to drive it 1200 miles again.

Thanks

I had the same thing happen and it didn’t come back over the next two weeks and seemed to drive fine. I took it to the dealer anyway and they ended up reprogramming the vehicle per BMW recommendation.

That was three weeks ago. Just yesterday I got a check engine light for the second time in 1800 miles. I guess I’ll be back at the dealer again this week.

Thanks for the reply. I will take mine in and post what they do to it. Hopefully we can find a solution.

Update - I am 1200 miles from home in Greenville SC. My wife dropped off the X5 this morning. Props to Century BMW for great service.

They told her they had another car come in this morning with the exact same problem and have seen it before. They are looking at it and will get back to me.

Note we are about 15 miles from the factory in Spartanburg. Maybe I should head over there and start asking people

Garage List
Bought my 2024 X5 50e back in June of 2023. It’s my first BMW. Love this SAV!!! Drives great and love that I don’t have to go to the gas station every week or so.

Unfortunately I got this message High voltage system and drivetrain message December 5 and then turned the car off and turned it back on and the error message was gone. Called the dealership that same day and made an appointment to have the dealer check it out and didn’t drop of the car December 13 because they didn’t when any loaners available until that date.

They now have my X5 5 days and still no update. Hopefully I get one today. Hope it’s really nothing.

I am close to 7k miles driven. I charge everyday to 90%. I don’t drive like I’m on the race track.

Seeing this happen to multiple owners kinda makes me a little scared, spending close to 90K-100k for a vehicle and to have this issue, kinda sad. You would think after the 40e and 45e that the would have worked out most of the bugs.

Update As noted earlier, car was dropped off this morning. Dealer said they found multiple high voltage errors.

They are updating software overnight and driving it tomorrow to see if it throws the errors again. If the errors are gone they will give me the car back.

Very happy with the service. Shaking my head that BMW doesn’t have a TSB out on this. It is way too common, they really screwed something up.

BMW Service update: For the "drive train and high voltage error" they updated the software, we'll see if this is a long term fix.

Just happened to me! Sounds like either it goes away and comes back or it’s so bad bmw buys back the car. Hopefully I get a cool loaner in the interim.

My car is back after 1.5 days at the shop. Software updates were applied, car tested, and so far so good. Now we drive it and see.

Really impressed by the dealership and how well they handled this.

Just picked my 50e 3 days ago. It was a Dec Wk49 build. After just 132 miles, I've now received the check engine light. Is this the drive train issue that alot of earlier 50e owners have reported? Have any recent owners within the past month experienced the same?

I think you are the first of the recent builds (last few months) to get it. Hopefully it is something simple and not the valve issue.

Let us know what the outcome is and good luck.

Thanks just my luck. Will let you know. BTW, looks like the valve issue is a common root cause for the 50e check engine light, as well as the drive train error. Are they related or separate issues? Are there other common issues reported for the check engine?

I think those are separate issues and there are some others that cause the CEL. In some cases it seems a software update takes care of the problem.

Received my 50e back from dealership with no issues found. Great to get it back! That a one off CEL can occur without being able to find out why is perplexing, but I guess I'll have to attribute this to a complex hybrid system with some buggy software

X5 hybrid double error warning

I just had the same problem come up with my 2024 X5 hybrid. I just bought it and was on a road trip; the vehicle has less than 600 miles on it. I got the same two errors - high voltage system and drive train. It said I could continue to drive but should take the car in for service. When I started the car again, the errors went away. I have an appointment to take the car in, but am concerned with the long wait times I am reading here.

Because of the long wait times, I decided not to take mine in. Like you, I got the message shortly after taking delivery. I cleared it out and in 600 miles it has never reappeared. I’ll take it in if it ever does reappear. hopefully, by that time BMW will understand the problem in the fix will be quick.

We bought a 50e on 9/28/23, 3 days later it was flat towed back to dealership were it has been in service to this day 1/14/2024 (108 days). BMWNA is "reluctantly" buying the 50e back this week. In our case the problem was the BMU(Battery Management Electronic Unit), the replacement unit was ordered from Germany, but even with BMWNA Tech assistance they could not and have not resolve the problem for 3 months.

There is a chance they got another defective BMU or like in this forum it has become a systematic problem that BMWNA wants to fix before sending out any more 50e. I can see BMW not wanting customers to cancel their orders if they admit to a problem they are trying to resolve, so that could be part of reason they are running silent on production halt or reduced production.

This Forum has been a great place to find out, unfortunately, the many safety issues and problems the 2024 BMW X5 50e has been having.

I hope others will join me in reporting these issues to the NHTSA at https://www.nhtsa.gov/report-a-safety-problem#vehicle. It is a pretty simple process to fill out.

We still love the BMW, but to hold BMW accountable to fix the problem(s) and help others not go thru the same problems and safety issues we are going through, we need to officially document them with the NHTSA.

Had it towed to dealership 9/28 and they will run diagnostics and see what the problem could be.

I made them aware of the same issues others are experience on this forum. Hopefully it is a mere code issue that can be corrected.

The dealership did provide us with a loaner and even offer us a new BMW electric, but we took the gas version.

I will post results as soon as we get the 50e back.
Apology for digging this up but I am seeing the exact same message today. Seeing your post does not give me confidence on it will get fixed and might ends up being bought back.

May I ask how did you communicate and negotiate with the dealer and BMWNA?

After about 40 days we started the Buyback directly with BMWNA, at first they were reluctant and didn't answer my emails or calls. So I consulted some LL Attorneys and they were more than willing to take on case, in CA. it was pretty much a slam dunk after 30 days. When I mentioned this to BMWNA "then" they started the Buyback more seriously. The dealership has been great, and our service manager has been sympathetic as well. In our case the dealership was not really involved in the Buyback, I dealt directly with BMWNA. The process has taken about 2 months, so if you decide to do it just be aware it takes time. They also offered me cash and keep of $4K if I kept the car, but at that time the 50e was in the shops for "90 days and not working", so I say no. FYI: If you accept a Cash and Keep at any time, you cannot Lemon Law vehicle in the future.
