^^^^^^Yeah and this "shifter" that does just get in the way and is no more a shifter than the channel up and down buttons on your TV remote. It is a switch and really serves no purpose other than being a fake that people perceive as a "shifter".

On the pre-LCI, it did have more functionality. While driving you can move it to the left and then manual shift by pushing it forward and pulling backward. This is very useful while turning because the shift paddles are mounted to the steering wheel and difficult to impossible to use when turning sharp.

I don't use paddle shifters in an SUV and wouldn't see much need to manually shift an automatic in a sharp turn. How often do you find yourself in that situation. Porsche, GM, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and others have thought this through a while back as I don't hear anyone in those camps having complaints about awkward steering wheel mounted apparatus.
Most of us are best to allow the onboard wizzardy to control the transmission.

Right you are but even those are just switches and sensors, the days of a physical direct linkage to the tranny are gone on an automatic tranny car. So, in that regard, this allows designers to put the tranny control just about anywhere they'd like.
To be honest, I use my X5 for trips, I'd be fine if they put the tranny switch on the dash and all the other switches there too and used the center console area for more storage, thing is, its not that deep under the console plate so it wouldn't store much in its current form but that's why designers get the big bucks, they can figure it out. They can zap the paddle shifters too, couldn't even tell you if mine work.
I think designers need to be cautious not to make drastic changes, it would scare buyers off so they make incremental ones, I'm find with that too. All that said, I have always and still do like the iDrive controller and do believe its location should be where your arm and hand naturally rest, which is where it is now.

The only thing I've ever done with the steering wheel paddle shifters is hold the left one back. Puts it in "sprint" mode, at least on the 50e.

Some of this talk reminds me of when I had my first PDK and realized that the whiz bang computer stuff on board could think much faster than I could in very short order.
I'll get myself another 3 pedal C7 Z06 if want to shift gears and probably will if the dealers are going to dicks with the on deck Eray.

Next generation X5 will likely have the gear selector integrated in the newest iDrive and operated trough the main touch screen display .
In case of a blank screen glitch, you do not drive anywhere...

That is what basically scares me about going all electronic. Cars will never have the sort of redundancy aircraft do.

Some others don't mount the paddles to the wheel, but the steering column so they don't turn with the wheel.

As for how often I use them.. If I am in sport plus, I will be using them. I still prefer the pre-LCI shifter.

A bit of a reply to a couple of posts.

For me I like going into reverse, drive, park without having to look down for the paddle. I find it easier when backing out of a spot or my driveway, that I can keep my eye on the other cars and use the stick to shift into drive.
Also, I know I’m not driving a Ferrari, but the paddle shifters are fun every now and then when NY traffic opens up, and you have a some uncongested roadway.
“Spirited Driving” is what I think it’s called.

Like most of you said, “It’s all about the preference of the driver” 👍

Anyone else who made the swap from LCI to Pre LCI gear shifter also notice that now in Sport Mode, Auto Start/Stop is disabled?
Unless I didn’t realize an over the air update that now allows ASS to be turned off.
Prior to me swapping it out, from all the forums, and my asking BMW, the new 2024 X5 G05 no longer has the function to deactivate it. It was really a disappointment. Knowing the LCI doesn’t have the ability to code anymore, and you can’t code the ASS feature to turn off, unless there was an update because of all the complaining, going back to Pre LCI gear shift allows the vehicle to automatically disable Auto Stop/Start when put in Sport Mode.

ASS was always off in Sport mode for the LCI.

There is absolutely no need to look at the console area when switching to Reverse or Drive in the LCI and you can skip the Park button, just push the start button.

Got it and thanks. Thought that was just on the X5M.

PJM that is sweet. And it's interesting that you pulled that off as I had deep conversations with some BMW tech folks (at the dealership) and they said that once you plugged in the pre-LCI shifter the vehicle would recognize that it was the wrong part and wouldn't work. Sort of the body rejecting the organ Kinda thing. It's also a HUGE benefit that it disables the auto off / stop function, which has been universally panned.

I thought the new LCI glass shifter had lighting accents.

When I made my post I hadn't seen the glass one but I now know it's available. I would take that any day over mine.

Yes no problem. I’m actually late on doing that and posting it. I wanted to take a video of replacing it, but glad I didn’t. Would have been more frustrating for anyone to watch me struggle just trying to unplug a connection.
I’ll do my best in typing out an explanation!
