Dealer tried to charge $385 for an oil change

Dropped my M50i for some items that needed to be taken care of. Was due for an oil change so I asked about their $129 special.... doesnt apply to the M50i... then asked about their $225 unlimited 3 year deal... doesnt apply to vehicles under 5 years old.... So, the price the service rep told me was $189. pricey, but whatever... a premium for convenience. All good.

Got the electronic pre-approved proposal in my email today. $385. Obviously I will get this corrected but WTF is BMW doing? Do people really roll in and pay $385 for an oil change???

But they provide coffee and water?

Yeah it's absurd. Buy a 12qt box of mobil 1 for $45 or so, a filter is $25 tops. Even buying new tools for it, and for funsies, it's under $100 for higher quality stuff than BMW will use.

It's probably the other little things they do which inflates the cost. One time at a Toyota dealership I was getting the oil changed on my 4Runner and they said the cabin air filter was dirty. I said they can replace it and they charged an extra $15 (labor) for what literally takes 10 seconds to do. I contested that $15 charge as completely unecessary (principle) and got them to remove it from the bill, but not without some very heated words coming from the service manager.

I think a lot of customers just pay these service bills without question so dealerships feel leeway to add in all kinds of little charges like shop fees (etc) to boost the profit they make. Maybe they replaced the cabin air filter too, those can be expensive!

Try owning a Porsche! 30k service was $1250 for my Cayenne. It included spark plugs of course. I assume they were made of gold. 10k service was $750.

I had a very similar experience recently with my dealer. I was quoted 190Euro over the phone when booking in for my first oil change. The work took approx two hours and when I went to pay they asked for 450Euro. I "debated" this with the service rep and refused to pay. I waited while the service manager pulled the recording of the call and I was proved right in terms of what I was quoted.
Honestly wonder if this is a scam where they bank on X amount of customers just paying whatever the bill happens to be...

A member on the X7 forum posted this last week, yours is a bargain.

"Ok, I understand that it’s expensive to live in the SF Bay Area, but yesterday at my local dealer, while taking in our 2020 x7 M50i for a warranty repair (before the warranty expired by 4 days!) my service advisor recommended we do the oil service early to save having to bring the car back in 2 months.

They have the sheet they give with 3 choices, minimum, something and recommended. The minimum cost was $2200+, I think the recommend was $2700+. For what the car says should be an oil service and visual inspection according to upcoming services in the app. The dealer sheet listed replacing the windshield wipers, coolant flush, replacing all the filters (cabin, recirc, engine and something else), topping off wiper fluid and a number of other minor items, I guess to make it seem like a bunch of value for the money.
"

Service is the money maker at most dealerships. Think what will happen when the majority of vehicles are EVs. No oil changes, no engine air filters, no transmission fluid or filter.
Wiper blades will be $300 and tire rotation will be $400.

Never buy a Porsche my friend.
An oil change on a 911 was more than that ten years ago.

Open to DIY? Oil and filter part maybe close to $100 tho. Need to go under the car for n63, but both plug and filter are easily accessable, probably a 30min job for 1st timer, including lifting the car up.

Was in similar situation, ours didnt cost that much but close. We were 8k miles away or 2 months away from the $225/3 yr offer ... We planned two long road trips before then, so bit the bullet and got it done
thats the price to pay for luxury.

Parts/materials price were fair/aligned for dealerships, but labor is were they make a killing.

I think most people that buys a 911 have less worry about service cost, lol.

I’ve had a 911 for about 20 years now and never had much use for the dealers because of the cost. Back then an oil change was about $250 but I just had my independent mechanic do all the work.

Except the engine replacement—that was actually done at the dealer and was remarkably reasonable at $11k in 2006. Can you imagine a Porsche dealer replacing an entire engine for that price today?

wow, let me read the detail on BMW site for this. From 3rd to 6th year, we at least get 3 oil change if mileage is low, so work out to be $75 each!!! Even oil + filter will be in the range for DIY.

I don't think you could even get a used Porsche engine for $11k now. Maybe a really crappy one.

The vehicle needs to be at least 60 months old or have 60k miles on it to qualify.

Ive misread his comment, i meant to say 911 turbo, lol.. regardless, impractical high end vehicle owners such as the 911 rarely need to worry about service cost.

Is there a sub-forum or thread on this board where I can find recommendations for local independent repair shops that do a reasonable job servicing BMWs? I have poked arond before but to be kind, the board's organization can be improved. Seems like a service we could provide to one another

The total bill for a new engine today would be staggering.
