New owners; watch that hatch when you get home.

The title pretty much says it: When I got home with the car and opened the hatch to get my stuff it would have hit the open garage door above it at the top of its opening if I hadn't stopped it.

I'm coming from a sedan and hadn't though of it; and was also only lackadaisically paying attention, so it was a close one. Others are probably more alert or might think about it in advance because they're coming from another SUV.

Anyhow, it would be pretty sucky to get your first scratch upon arriving home; so... FYI

Oh yeah, my doors are standard height and setting 2 works for staying below the door when open.

Funny you mentioned this. I was visiting a friend who just got a 2024 X5, they too only had sedans prior to the X5. We were loading stuff in the cargo space and I noticed they had already done some paint touchup to the area near the rear Roundel. They saw me looking at it and told me the story, just like yours! So I promptly showed them where to go in iDrive to lower the hatch's opening height. They didn't know you could do that.

Now the issue is that he hits his head on the tailgate, he's rather tall. The way I look at it is his head will heal

lol, yeah, same here, I'm tall and I'd prefer it higher but as you say, I'll heal!

Yup this is so true... i just took home my first x5 last night and it was a good thing i saw a youtube video of adjusting the tailgate height prior to delivery.

I too have a standard garage door height and i was so worried about hitting it that i had to back up the car and took a measuring tape to make sure it cleared. I started 3 notches down, but it was too low and a dangerous head knocker at the edges (hard to miss especially at night). i ended up adjusting it one notch down, but my finger was next to the button just in case it didn't clear

Low ceiling on some parking garages is another one to be careful about....

Coming from an F80 I purposely never tried to open my X5 hatch in the garage. Never bothered to measure but figured it wouldn't fit.
Spent 8 months having to stop in the driveway, unload the cargo, close the hatch and then park.

A couple of weeks ago, with garage door closed, walked around the car and hit the foot hatch sensor by mistake. Had mild panic attack when the hatch began to open.
Didn't have time to stop it, but basically ended-up about 1/2 inch from hitting the garage door (closed), but finally realized I can actually open it, even with the garage door open!!!

Only took 8 months

Still scary to see it go so close, but should be fixed soon as I am lowering the car anyway

That's one way to fix er! Do report back on your results with the lowering if you don't mind.

Bringing home a new car is like a new woman you're about to bed: Sure there are manuals, but reading one isn't exactly what you're thinking about in the moment.

That's what I was thinking.

I had the hatch open on my X6 while it was in the garage and I foolishly opened the garage door while the hatch was still up. It scraped a divot of paint off an edge, but was fixable.

Keeping keys in your pocket is one sure way to sooner or later have the hatch open unexpedtedly.

Your BMW Genius should have asked you about this before you left the dealership. At least mine did.

I changed the setting in idrive so the rear opens at 75% or so.

I also disabled it to open automatically when you swipe with your foot. When charging my car in the past the cable went under the rear bumper and that was enough to open the rear.

Yes, did happen to me af few times with the new LCI keys. I never had this with the previous key fob I had with my 45e. I liked the previous key a lot more.

If the bottom of your garage door rests lower than the header (aka the head jamb) of the structure's opening, you should be able to adjust it so that it opens higher into the garage. Our door rests with with the door about 2" higher into the rails to give us as much room as possible.
We dont have a problem with the X5's hatch at its highest. The split door helps a lot with this. I love this part of the X5's design. (same as the old US Land Cruiser)
But I do wish the rear window rolled down like the 4Runner's.

Good tip on the kick opening feature, hadn't thought of that one. It's the little things that get you...

I'd have to look but I recall that there is a way to set the limit of how far the hatch opens (at least by default). Unless I am thinking about my last car having this feature....

You can limit it with a 24, not sure about before ---> Vehicle/doors and windows/tailgate/opening height.

I program it to a safe opening height and manually push the hatch up to avoid hitting my head.

When I took delivery, the dealer's sales rep brought the car to the house. His first step was to set the hatch opening limit to accommodate the garage. He was, however, optimistic and set it to the interior clearance. When he left, I set it even lower to the doorway height. A sensor would be very, very, very nice.

Garage List
This was one of the first things I did before bringing my new car home, as I knew it would likely hit the garage.

Garage ceiling too low so I built a new garage :-p haha. Kidding aside, once the height is set you can forget about. Its so nice to have the tailgate piece fold out as well for loading/unloading.
