I've been thinking about those grills. I think I know why BMW went with those. If you think about it, basically every other auto maker with large turbo engines, or large engines, does large grills. Think Lexus, Audi. But with their design language, it comes natural. They get the cooling they need and look stylish doing it. BMW on the other hand is stuck with the kidney design. Obviously those can only get so big before they start looking obnoxious/weird. Until the point where they've merged together, touching eachother. This is where BMW's large kidneys come in. That and they need the cooling for the more powerful turbo engines that come out every generation. So this will be the norm for BMW. It has to be. Until they go away from kidneys. Which they won't and can't since it's their signature design element.
As you can see there's a need to have a certain amount of grill real estate for cooling... hard to accomplish that with kidneys without going very large. BMW has a unique problem on their hands: create a very large grill opening adequate for the engine's cooling needs but retain the kidney design.

Go and have a look at all those vehicles that you are talking about; is just a design trend and brand statement, nothing more. If you will look closely, you will see that many of the cars mentioned by you dont actually have that much open air flow, there is a lot of fake behind. Even your Audi picture shows half grill obstructed. Not to mention, many, including BMW are using active flaps in the grill to increase the efficiency and aerodynamics. See BMW Active Air Stream Kidney Grille. BMW M turbo vehicles are doing just fine with normal grille, right? Also, ever heard of turbo rear mounted engine vehicles? ^^^ THIS. I think it looks like a Merc GLE or possibly Acura as well. They softened the light design too much. I like the edgier prior design.

It's called Grill-estate and it keeps getting bigger. At least it's still better than any of the Lexus designed cow-catchers...........

I think this is probably the second worst BMW design I have seen in recent times.
The worst of all time being the egg shaped human transporter known as the i3.

Has the X5 started looking more like the X3 or has the X3 started looking more like the X5?

It's interesting how things have changed for BMW. We went through the Bangle years where everyone was complaining about the radical designs. Following that, BMW seems to have become very conservative in their redesigns. This exterior does nothing for me since it is too close to the F15. What I think will matter more is the interior and overall feel. I was jumping from my F15 to a 2018 Q7 yesterday - what a difference, the Q7 interior is so much more substantial and well executed including an air conditioner that works. Love BMW, just hope they have nailed the interior and overall feel of the G05.

Finally a photo of the Style 741M wheels! I like them! Those are the ones we ordered. Interesting that they are on a non-MSport. According to order guide they are only an upgrade for the MSport package. Of course that is the US guide, so maybe in other countries they are available in the XLine. |

Darker colors + xLine definitely looks the best. Mine 2017 doesn't come off lease until October next year - definitely going M Sport and hoping ZDH becomes available and ZOR with ZMP on the 40i.

Everyone's gonna have their own opinions, but I do always find it curious that it tends to be the same people who spend their whole weekend trying to find some vague resemblance to some component on another car so they can then start complaining about how much they hate new BMW.
I thought the F15 was stupid ugly. The rear lights and rear running LEDs are so big, they look like duplo blocks when everyone else is playing with legos. I still don't like the light-to-grill connection and it was overdone on the front of the F15. Plus, they just looked awkward as hell (except the X5M - that bodykit makes the F15 look great to be honest). I think the G05 looks spectacular, and it's now on the list for either my replacement or my wife's. The front looks much more aggressive and serious - and with blacked-out kidneys I think will look great. The rear isn't special - the rear lights are more focused and refined, but while they don't "stand out," they also don't "stand out in a terrible way" like the F15s, so I think that's a win. BMW has ALWAYS been about refined, conservative styling with a driving capability that gives you a better high than most drugs. If I wanted some crazy space-robot-from-the-future looks, I'd go to Lexus or something. |

Love the front. The rear makes me cringe. The tail lights look Jeep Cherokee-esk and the placement of the rear model designation badges leave me wondering "wtf were they thinking?!?"
