For those of you who have the X5 40i, how many miles do you typically get with a tank?

I have been averaging 300-350 (max). Is this normal?

I fill up with either 92/93 octane.

Would love to hear what you guys are getting?

One thing to keep in mind is that when you must use a fuel with ethanol in it, the total energy per volume is lower, so you'll get less efficiency than someone using the same octane fuel that is all petrochemicals.

Without knowing your mix of highway, city, how long your typical trip is, comparisons aren't all that useful. Driven per the EPA test cycle, you'd be getting a bit over 400-miles per tank...but few people drive their vehicles like that test. Me personally, usually beat the EPA ratings, some end up way below them. Lots of short trips with a bunch of stop and go, and your mileage will be lousy. Mostly highway with no traffic, and you can probably exceed the EPA ratings, maybe by a 20-30%. Drive 70 versus 85, and you'll get much better mileage.

18-20 mpg average if im driving normal in NYC- which is NOT city driving the way the EPA considers city driving. NYC driving is pretty much a torture test for fuel mileage. Around 14-16 with some hooning around on my 40i.

I can usually go a good 350-400 miles per tank.

Thanks, yes I'm from the LI area so I have some local driving and some highway mixed. Yet I still haven't reached that 350-400 range.

I coded both exhaust flaps to be open so I don't know if that is lowering the fuel efficiency?

13.5k miles in, I'm getting 21.67 MPG since factory, mostly driving around in the Philly and NJ suburbs, usually in Adaptive mode, though I do use Sport Individual to pick up from complete stops rather often. No other 'quirks' to my driving as such.

The highest I've ever gotten was 470 on a single tank which was nearly all highway driving up the 95 corridor, but more typically I've been seeing 375-410.

93 octane; no flap mods.

25.5 mpg from new, after ~22K miles on our '19 40i.

Just returned from a 300+ mile road trip (each direction), mostly 75 mph going, 27.7 mpg. 60-65 mph backroads returning, 32.2 mpg.

On my initial 2400 mi highway trip I got just over 30 mpg at typical 10 mph over the posted limit. That included a fair number of miles at over 80 mph but easing up on the pedal whenever going downhill.

Off topic, but Tesla drivers are usually suffering from the so-called "range anxiety". For those down to Earth - we'll be enjoying the one's absence. We can even turn on the AC in summer.

I need to re check mine. I usually dont ever drive much with my cars (5-7k miles a year) but I recently started taking an hour trip each way a few times a week and been driving in eco mode only and I want to say im almost getting 30mpg but need to confirm which I plan on doing next fuel up.

Safe to say that because my car is new just at 2k miles, I may need to drive it longer to increase fuel efficiency?

You really can't judge other people who are outside of NYC/long island.

They don't see the traffic we do. The only place that competes is LA.

Ive been to Boston, Hartford, Philly, DC, Baltimore, Richmond, Pittsburgh, Newark, Raleigh, Nashville, Chicago, Dallas, Austin, Houston, Denver, Portland, Seattle, basically every major metropolitan area and none of them hold a candle to NYC/Nassau country traffic.

We will always have worse MPGs compared to advertised city driving.

EPA city driving is around a 43 MPH average LOL NYC driving is about a 15 MPH average.

I typically get 400-500 miles on full tank.
I do drive slow around 60-70 mph and mostly highway miles with minimal traffic.
I'm getting 23-24 mpg.

Forcing the exhaust flaps open constantly will make the engine take longer to fully warm up which WILL affect mileage. How much, can't say.

Until the engine is warmed up, the computer actually inserts MORE fuel into the cylinders so that it runs rich, that then causes the catalytic converter to produce more heat to get up to temperature to clean it up. Once it's detected that it's up to temp, it leans the mixture out and can then maintain it's proper operating tempeature...so, by forcing it open, you're causing the vehicle to run rich longer. Again, no idea how much impact there is, but there will be some in an apples-to-apples test. I expect that will be worse in the winter when things will be starting up from a much lower temperature than in the summer, which it is already relatively warm.

It's relatively minor, but cold temperatures result in denser air, which also increases drag which affects mileage. As we warm towards summer, things should get better unless you like to run your cabin like an icebox.

Altitude. Can't compare your MPG with flatlanders.

I've started seeing numbers in the 500s as of late, though it's largely in part due to 3x Philly-Boston round-trips in a month, so tons of highway miles in Adaptive/S+. I like this. A lot.

I'm averaging 18mpg since factory, mostly city/surface street driving. In practice this works out to a solid 400 miles a tank. I fill up with 91 octane.

To compare: I'm coming from a 2013 E70 X5 35i with a bigger fuel tank (24 gal vs 22) than the G05, and it was hit or miss whether I'd get 300 miles on a tank doing the same driving in that car.

For a car that's larger and faster... it's pretty great. They did a really nice job with this vehicle.

For some reason I was under the impression my 2021 X5 M50i had a fuel capacity of ~19 gallons, then I read this and looked it up ... 21.9!

Not sure were I got 19???

You probably pay for 19 gallons at the pump, as when it's reading "empty" or close to empty it has a couple of gallons still in the tank

I recently spent time in Mississippi where I had access to 93 octane ethanol free gas. That is all I bought while there for my 2021 X5 Xdrive40i. On my recent return to Colorado, I filled up after a bit less than 500 miles. The vehicle computer indicated I had averaged 29.5 mpg since starting the return. This was with cruise control typically set at 5 over the limit, so I was usually driving at 75-80. I didn’t think it was supposed to do this well, but I have no reason to doubt the computer. Of course 93 octane ethanol free is going to be as good as it gets.

A fixed speed at a computer controlled cruise with minimal traffic or stops is going to get you the best possible efficiency at any specific speed. Have to start/stop/accelerate/idle a lot, and all bets are off!

The PHEV will be better at that start/stop/idle situation than the ICE, but it also has more weight to carry around, which offsets much of it except on cruise.

After my last fill-up it said 620. I've been driving a lot of highway miles at about 80 to 85. The average is saying 26.3 since last month 2500 miles on the clock. Quite a bit of city driving as well though and a lot of idling trying to learn the iDrive stuff.
