Apple working with BMW on iOS Digital Carkey

I know that most of us know through these forums about this feature but looks like it's getting ready. My Digital Key subscription just expired. I don't think I am going back to renew it (though pretty reasonable US$20 per year).

I cant wait for this. I always end up using the physical digital key card to get in and out of my car when I dont have the fob with me. It used to work from inside my wallet and now it doesn't, but its still more convenient for me to use that than my key fob. I would love this to be a reality. hopefully they extend it to the iphone X, not just cap it at the 11.

I am not going to trust the ability to open and operate a car to a company that broke their email app and can't get it working right again for almost a year. But iOS 13.4 just released gives us more emoji, so clearly Apple knows where the priorities lie. You think iDrive 7 is unreliable? New Apple says "hold my beer" ...

I'm digging around for an old article that posted in 2019 about features similar to this. Me personally am opposed to car subscriptions to use whats already built into a vehicle that I bought. I get if you are leasing you don't own it, but look at what Tesla does to the used car market, but a car with long range from factory and they charge the new owner the same to have it on a car that already has it. In that article it was stating Apple or other manufactures could charge to have it on the phone then you pay to have it on the car double dip. Just me being worried about nickle and dime.

I have to say that after alot of aggravation, I got the feature working on my Samsung Galaxy S10+ and love it. I am also opposed to paying a subscription for a feature that is not only built into the vehicle but should be free for a luxury brand. But for $20 a year I will make a exception.

Sadly because most of us will be okay with 20 here and there the subscriptions are here to stay for sure. I mean there are already brands where you pay monthly to just use cars per month not even lease them. I'm afraid at some point in time you won't be able to buy the vehicle but rather subscribe and pay monthly to use one. Maybe far off but just my worry.

I think you are right and I do hope its FAR off :-) Basically, the more interactions involved between us and our cars, the more issues we will continue to have. I like convenience, I like tech and gadgets but have gotten to the point that it takes far too much time to keep them all working and troubleshoot them when they don't. Interfacing with the likes of BMW Connect and their Genius's and having Apple support on the line while troubleshooting is time consuming and at the end, even if you get to a successful conclusion, you only get back to where you once were but never get the time back in your life that it took out of it. Just give me a metal key to get into my car with

Those subscriptions are way more expensive than a lease though. Not sure that model is sustainable unless they can bring the pricing closer to lease pricing, and then it will likely just replace leasing. I could be wrong, but I think the subscription services like Volvo offers put you at payments even higher than a financed payment be... you pay a big premium to avoid the longer term commitments. Niche market. I don't think that's the same thing as the nickel and dime subscriptions needed for tech features.

But I agree, we shouldn't have to pay for such things. Same with the connected apps and road side services (BMW Assist) etc.. Volvo started giving theirs away for 4 years instead of 1. At least that covers leases and a good portion of finance purchases.

Hey don't get me wrong, I am not happy with the subscription fee.
Pisses me off that the cheaper Lincoln Aviator has the feature included free with no subscription cost. I would think that BMW would have learned a lesson from the Apple Carplay fee debacle- but no. Insatiable greed knows no bounds.

Except BMW didn't learn their lesson. My take is based on the timing, BMW had exclusive WIRELESS apple carplay and therefore wanted to capitalize on that (To be fair, they probably did spend money to make this work). They made it free when other competitors had wireless as well. I'm not 100% sure about Audi but I know Benz definitely got wireless carplay in their new cars. I believe even Hyundai is going to start offering wireless carplay.

If you think about it, the luxury automakers try to package the same options. The trend is to include safety features including ACC on all models (even Honda/Hyundai are doing that), but the 3 German auto makers all charge $1500-2200 for those options.

I don't think this is a right/wrong issue, it's just business.

I think the article state iOS 14, so we're a few months out before they release that. Typically around the holidays, right?

LOL (seriously, I am absolutely not offended). But, for a fun self-awareness exercise, read your response as a response to your own post :-), what does that look like to you?

I am just pissed that yet another iOS update (13.4) was released yesterday with a bloody broken email app. In 2020. By the world's richest company. But we got more emoji ...
