M50i Fans overrun
Hi Guys,
Picked up my M50i yesterday (finally!), first thing i've noticed is the time that the fans overrun for when I stop the engine. I've just been out for a 'gentle' drive for 30 mins and the fans ran for 7 minutes after engine shut down. Is that normal? (vents were open then closed after the fans stopped..) Thanks |

Thanks, thats reassuring that its normal, going to be a pain in the butt whirring away outside the house late at night everytime I come in though.
Hopefully as the engine loosens up it will naturally run cooler... |

With a big V8 TT, the heat traps in the engine compartment must be significant, therefore, requires the fan to run for a few mins after engine shut off. |

A totally annoying and unnecessary feature. No other V8 I know of does this. Aren’t the vents supposed to be shut during a certain distance of driving to make the X5’s nose more streamlined? Again, totally unnecessary, the extra 1/4 mile per gallon saving in fuel or whatever, crazy

I sometimes get home and leave the car running for a few minutes while I reply to text messages, etc...
I've noticed that doing this prevents the fan and water pump from running after I turn it off. |

This is exactly the reason. BMW has been producing twin-turbo V8s with the turbochargers in between the cylinder banks since 2008. The first five years or so were... not good. The engines would not cool properly and seals (especially valve stem seals) would degrade over time. The upgraded components and cooling strategies in the N63B44M3 in the 50i and the N63B44T3 in the M50i exist as the result of hard-learned lessons.
