Tired of the dusty M Sport brakes? Step inside

I bought the M Sport brakes for increased stopping power and for general safety. What I didn't want was all the dust, the pain of cleaning the wheels and mostly the sea of black that stains my driveway with every washing. I changed my pads out on my M3 2 years ago and used the Power Stop Z16 pads. For the past 2 years I've enjoyed noise free, dust free and trouble free brakes. So I decided to put a set on out new G05. The problem is, no one makes a pad for a 2019 G05. SInce I know BMW uses a lot of the same parts on various cars, I went to real oem dot com and pulled up my vehicle and build date and the front and rear oem brake part numbers. I then searched those part numbers and found that the 750i with M Sport brakes uses the same exact pad as my G05 M Sport brakes. So I ordered a set of Z16 pads. 16-1868 for the front and 16-1469 for the rear. When they came in I compared them to the oem pads and sure enough, they were a match. When I compared the stock to the new pads, I noticed the stock pads had each side of the pad ground down to the plate making the pad much smaller than the back plate. Some would say that was just chamfering, but to me it looks like they were trying to reduce the pad size so that it doesn't compete with the stopping distance of the X5M when released. That's my opinion, but i've seen stuff like this on their M models
The pads are easy to change, but unfortunately BMW has made this a non DIY project. The reason is you used to be able to push your pistons in on the floating rear caliper, drop your pads in and go. Now the G body cars have calipers that have to be retracted with a computer. If you don't, your dash will light up with errors and alerts. I have a friend that has the software to retract the rotors for me so I did the job myself. It took me 1.5 hrs with a floor jack, flat screw driver, a punch and a 13mm and 17mm wrench. I've attached some pics for comparison. The black dust you see caked on the inside of the caliper is only after 3k miles.

very interesting. Thank you for sharing. Any noticeable difference in terms of breaking power compared to the stock pads?

Braking is even better. Initial bite better than oem. There's no trade offs or downsides to the pads. Just clean wheels.

I would love to do this.....I hate dirty wheels and they're a PITA to clean properly. Do you think its possible to retract the pistons via something like Bimmercode or another OBD connected tool?

No, this isn't simple coding. Your dealership would have to do it or Rheingold software.

Last time I wanted my dealer to install non OEM shoes while my car was under warranty, they refused :-(

I am sure there are some Indy shops that could handle the brake pads without causing much of a fuss with Ol Man BMW Service.

Is the G05 first BMW where brake piston retraction is triggering alarms? never heard of this.

Heard of brake sensor not being reinitialized properly; - but hydraulics?

so what if you just push them in and get some warnings, can you go after and turn them off?

I used to drive on track without BMW sensors all the time (they fry in a hear bit) with the warning light and no ill effects. (but that was e46 M3 and e39 M5)
I'm sure things are different now.

What about new M340? it has the same brake system as G05 - no brake booster - brake by wire from pedal to master cylinder and Hydraulics from Master cylinder to calipers?

The only way is if they have the newest scan tool with the latest software. My friend with a 2018 scan tool couldn't connect to my G05.

I was told this started in all the G chassis cars. I’m not talking about the pad wear sensor that clips into the top of the pad. There’s something in the caliper that tracks the pistons position within the caliper. When you manually move the piston, the car gets confused on the position of the piston and lights up your dash. You can manually move the positions, but there is a chance for damage BMW says, and then go to the dealership and have everything reset. I imagine they’ll charge you an hour of labor. Just keep in mind the car may not brake properly if it’s confused on the pistons position.

Good point, most Indy's probably won't upgrade their tools and software until they start seeing some of the newer vehicles come off warranty.

skalbeti - what purpose does the punch provide? Is that part of picture #4?

The punch is used to push the two retaining pins out the back of the caliper to release the front pads.

I did the same thing on my F80 M3 and replaced the excessively dusty OEM pads with Power Stop Z16 ceramic pads. It was a really great upgrade and there was virtually no visible brake dust on my wheels after the upgrade.

I just ordered a set for my G05 from RockAuto.com...$70 delivered for front and rear pads. Good stuff.

Let us know how it goes as the info in this post makes is sound like you have to get your dealer to install those pads which might be an issue. Would like to hear your experience.

Too cool, I have never done a brake job on a Bimmer (other than my R1200RT) so those pins are new to me.

Those have to be the most beautiful Calipers I have ever seen.... when clean of course.

I was thinking that I need to get black rims on the Mineral White to make it look good. Turns out, no need — brake dust is almost finished doing it for me already after 1.5 weeks. Bonus!

We did that exact same thing on our wash!! we also have mineral white with 21" and it looks awesome with it being a set of darker rims. I'm not kidding either. hahaha

the blue brakes calipers looks dirty though. Anyone know if we can use regular brake cleaner to spray it down?
