Broken new car at 300 miles, Given loaner with WINTER tires
As the title suggests: picked up a brand new M car for it to have a bunch of issues within the first 300 miles/4 days, CEL, stalling on startup, wont start, awd error etc. I bring the vehicle in and wait around all day for a loaner. I finally get one at the end of the day.... and it has WINTER TIRES ON IT! Besides the fact that its august, this makes absolutely no sense. How havent they noticed that a loaner in circulation is equipped with super soft, hardcore snow tires with snowflakes clearly printed on the sidewall. I assume the dealer checks tire-treads after every time the vehicle is brought back....
Besides being frustrated that the new car is broken due to not being assembled correctly, I now have a loaner that we cant drive as it is beyond dangerous to drive an SUV with such tires in such high temperatures. I am astonished considering the liability I assume this has. I wouldn't think its wrong to assume that this is extremely negligent on the dealers part? Anyone have any advice? |

Assuming that you respect posted speed limits, you won't be driving fast enough on US roads for the winter tyres to experience traction issues - the only thing you will experience is extreme tread wear, but that will be something for the dealer to worry about.

Guess my question is are they truely snow tires? If the X5 loaner has black multi-spoke wheels then if could be outfitted with the M Performance All-terrain wheelset and if tires are General Grabber AT3 then they are X5 all season all-terrain/off-road tires that are M+S rated.

Ive always heard that they effect the center of gravity as softer tires can create a pivot point, amplifying vehicle roll and subsequently a substantially worse "moose test". Ive never actually looked into it though, just assuming that if summer tires are that scary in the winter, winter tires in the summer are just as dangerous. Oh well.

Could be worse, could be winter, you car goes in for service and you are given a loaner with SUMMER tires.
Yes, that happened to me. I only noticed when I got to work. The dealer sent someone down to swap it out when I called them but I’m pretty sure I saw the same loaner back in the loaner area and I doubt they changed the tires. |
