OK, everyone has been very helpful. So I'll share the end result. Went back to the Porsche dealer and test drove the Macan S again. One problem with it that wasn't going to go away. The seat didn't feel comfortable at my upper back. I mean the thing is FUN as all get out for a quick drive but as a daily or long range trip I was not going to be happy.

Test drove another Cayenne. New base model with 21" wheels. I bought it. Clearly a better driving car than the X5. You get more for your money with BMW but supposedly I'll get some of that back in resale value over the BMW. Whatever.

I had tried buying at my nearest dealer and all they would offer is 1% discount. We were all polite and all but that was not happening. Went a bit further afield and got 5% off. And 1.95% interest. They let me walk before when I wanted more so I'm sure that's all they were giving.

Car gets delivered next week and I return my lease 540i. Happy that the decision is made and everything done. Kinda large payments but whatever. At least this time after 5 years I own something.

Thanks for letting me share this with you all.

Congrats! It must feel good to finally have made a decision after going through a multitude of choices Be sure to post pictures when you receive your Cayenne.

Thanks. It is actually a relief. I think I might have been over researching this as I have too much time on my hands. And access to too much information. In the end I realized I wanted a mid size not a compact, and I wanted the Porsche more than the X5. Just barely enough more to equal the price delta. But it was what I wanted.

I’m a Porsche guy myself, but the Cayenne, at least in pictures, looks generic and meh. In the wild, it does look more distinctive and upscale - but I don’t know, for that kind of money?

I’m very impressed with my wife’s custom ordered X5. Great value proposition.

I agree that one can get an equally configured/featured X5 for less money than a Cayenne. No question. There is about a $10K delta. And I bought the Cayenne cause I just liked it more. Looks, driving, etc.

But the Porsche sales people would take issue with the statement the X5 is a better VALUE. Based on resale. No clue who is right.

But I used their argument internally to justify buying what I wanted.

I suppose the good thing about driving a cayenne is that you don't have to look at the outside of it!.

depending when you sell your Porsche, you might get that $10k back. BMW x5 will depreciation harder and faster. However around 7 years it kinda evens out.

so if you sell your Cayenne in less than 3-5 years, you'll be ahead of the X5.
if you sell in 5-7 years, you'll probably be about equal with the $10k difference.
After 7-10 years, they will both be down to roughly the same. but with the 10k difference and Porshe mantaince prices; the BMW x5 might eek out a slightly more.

Totally agree. The issue I have with the Cayenne is that Porsche seem to think the original design has the same timeless characteristics of the 911 lineage. Sadly it doesn't and it looks dated unless you spec a high end variant.

Of course looks are personal taste. At least it isn't a Lexus RX350

I went through same decision last May...weighed all the + / - and decided on the X5. You'll love the Porsche. The negative comments about the design I don't understand...style appeal is personal, but I think the Cayenne (and the Macan vs X3) is a far better design. My X5 looks similar to most mid-size SUVs...and IMO has a mediocre rear design at best. The Cayenne imo is sporty and unique. Best of luck with your new car!
