Yea..... apparently we have "Martens" here in Belgium. I guess they are kinda like ferrets. They crawl up in your engine bay to get warm, chew up your hoodliner for bedding.... and you don't find it until you pop your hood one day to add washer fluid.

2 holes.... one in the top center.... and another over by the driver side.

They've got my wife's car..... and my car too now. I don't care about her car. I do care about mine though.

Anyone know the part number for a hood liner?

Here's an interesting article about the damage that Martens cause cars in Germany. Apparently they've migrated to Belgium too.

They are called marters in dutch and it's quite common over here in rural places.

They eat hoses and circuits that contain fish oil or fish flour. You can ask your garage to install marter protection

Thanks. No one is going to send something that large to an APO address, so I'm probably better just ordering it from the local bmw dealer when everything opens back up.

I have heard about them in Germany too. They eat windshield wipers if I recall correctly?

WHO says they do not come from virology labs in China but Dr Fauci says he's not convinced just yet.

Yup, I remember being at my friends house in southwest Germany and he was ranting and raving about his rubber hoses being chewed by Marten's and he showed me the hose - ugh, chewed up. They come during the night to feast on your cars rubber parts. I laughed when he told me the story as at first I thought he was joking.. .. then he showed me the hoses

Had them visiting my 330d a few years back. Had a small marten family in there. We even caught them red handed. (A video of our catch was even featured in a BBC documentary)

More pictures here:

Ordered a 'Mardersicher' set in Germany (www.amazon.de). It's a high voltage device that shocks them when in the engine bay. My BMW concession (Genk, Belgium) installed it for me. Call them if you need help. They still talk about it every time I visit.

I never had any martens visiting by car since the Mardersicher installation. At least 5 other neighbours had martens visiting their cars over the years.

That fish-oil story is nonsense. It's all over the internet.
They like engine bays in early spring because they are warm. Certainly when the days are warm and the nights still cold.

Messing everything up and eating the hoses is a territory issue. They defend their territory violently against other martens. If you park your car somewhere at work and a marten just visits or crawls into your car it leaves a smell.

When you are back home and 'your' martens smells the intruder. They just go mental. They want to find that intruder and go on a frantic everywhere they find the odour of their (long gone) competitor.

Yup, definitely a problem here in Germany. I've seen one in my parking lot and had many mornings where I see the traces of paws across the exterior. Up until now no damages though.

When I first moved here I saw people placing nets under their cars at night, had no idea what that was about until 'Marderschaden' became part of my vocabulary a couple of years later.

The spark plug wires on my E31s have these little rings on them, that virtually cover the entire wire. I originally thought they were some sort of insulation (since the V12 generates a lot of heat), but when I looked them up, I found out they were Marten protectors.
