I gotta believe that a 45e with acoustic glass option will make for a very quiet interior at 70mph. I was hoping to see 600+ mile highway range but not sure 18 gal tank will get us there (in the real world traveling at 75 or so MPH on a road trip)
The 50i can be efficient if you want it to be. 400-450miles on a tank is entirely possible seeing how I've done it a few times now. In the end it'll depend on whether you want power or fuel economy because the 50i is a completely different beast than the 45e

I don't see how I will ever get around accepting the truly shocking looking back, it manages to be dull and ugly at the same time, just love to know how this design was approved

What colour is the black 45e from press information? Saphir or carbon black?

For me the white and other car images under the opening post are not 45e. I don't see the electrical charging opening in the nose left side...

FYI,for those who needs:

1. SUV
2. AWD
3. PHEV
4. 3rd row seats

The ONLY vehicle available in this combo is the Volvo XC90 T8. If only this X5 or the upcoming X7 45e can have the third row, I will stay with the brand. I really want to stay with BMW as I am very brand loyal, but unfortunately, I'll be jumping to Volvo for my family car

The combined power of the battery and ICE and the immediate torque and HP available from the battery will make the 45e a better tow vehicle and have better street performance.

I'd choose 45e over 50i even if 50i was cheaper

You can count on it. I'm not aware of any PHEV on the market that'll allow the battery to completely drain. (the euro spec Audi Q7 etron PHEV allows a complete drain) Even the i8 will keep about 4 or so miles of electric range on the battery?

Very nice. Given the range of 50 miles, I'd never have to put fuel in this thing unless I go on a road trip. Very appealing.

How does a vehicle in this configuration typically operate? Does the engine help you to accelerate up to speed and then turn off to let you coast on electric? I see the electric motor also transmits power through the transmission. I can't imagine the 115 or so hp would do anything but assist acceleration and maybe let you cruise.

Also, if anyone knows — on the 40i gas models is the AC compressor electrically driven or belt-driven by the engine?

Depends on how hard you accelerate/how much battery power you have.

Based on my limited experience with the 40e, on a full charge you could do virtually all of your driving (acceleration, coasting, etc.) on the electric engine. If the battery was too low or if you really stomped on the gas, the ICE would kick in (seamlessly - I hardly even noticed because it was so quiet). Generally, when you let off the gas the electric motor would kick back in and allow you to cruise with the ICE off. You have the option of putting the car in hybrid mode (where it would alternate between electric/ICE depending on conditions), sport (ICE only), or electric (which would use only the electric motor unless you stomped on it too hard or ran the battery down too low).

I disagree, the 50i has a huge amount of torque from very low RPM. The 50i also quicker, lighter, and will handle better so street performance favors the 50i just not on the mileage front.

When the car is in hybrid mode, throttle position will dictate which motor is being used. In all cases the battery will always deliver power.

So in traffic, if you're inching up, or moderately accelerating, it'll be all battery power. When enough throttle is given, the ICE kicks. The moment you put less pressure on the throttle or completely remove throttle, the battery is the primary power unit. Upon coasting and deceleration, the car charges the battery.

In sport mode, the ICE and battery delivers power at all throttle positions.

In e-drive mode, the ICE typically will not turn on until the battery reaches a predefined minimum level. The car then drives in hybrid mode until there is sufficient charge to the battery to a predetermined level (via plugging it in or regenerative braking) for e-drive and allow battery only power again.

Electric only is maddeningly slow. I tried it before in the i8 for 30 minutes. You'll want to do hybrid mode and accept a combined 35-40 gasoline mpg for a 5000 lb vehicle.
