I noticed that at high speeds. I was worried I could hear a drone at high speeds but even at above 95mph, the cabin is silent. So silent that cruising at triple digits feels like 60mph. I can’t believe I got through this trip without a ticket.

I completely agree, My M40i had a louder exhaust but maybe that's just because there was less insulation. Have you disabled ASD on the X5? I'm certain BMW has it to a degree like on all of their models.

I ride in Sport most of the time at home but I want to hear the exhaust then. I did use Adaptive a few times but it was open roads and couldn’t tell any difference from comfort. I was worried there might be a odd frequency or drone as I am ocd with noises. After 700 miles of strait driving would get me insane. Honestly at my age, I can’t imaging doing 1100 miles non stop in anything but the BMW was perfect. I did use the semi autonomous driving mode for a few hours and it pretty much drove itself. I just drummed on the steering wheels with the music and everything was good. Last edited by MystroX5; 02-13-2019 at 03:10 PM.. |

That GTS is and was an awesome machine that Stuttgart blessed us with. Couldn't beleive how long it was when outside and how small it got when pushing the pedals. Hows the Q8 been overall? Aaaaah, this lucky fellow had a GTS Panamera (not a 2019 refresh model), and they were all christened with a 4.8L V8 sucking in ambient pressure air. A lovely motor, even if altitude sickness would sometimes be on the menu.

So glad this thread was refreshed. I am doing the exact same 2200 mile trip again this year except we are staying longer. This time I hope to take my time on the way back and not try to beat any ice storms.
This is the only captain’s chair I would want to be in again. As good as these cars are around home, it isn’t till you stretch it’s legs do you really appreciate the details as any car can feel comfortable for little trips. Predatory left lane shark! I enjoyed your review. My wife and I have just got back from a similar length journey across Europe. It was pretty good in our X3, no real discomfort to speak of.
We’re really looking forward to doing the same journey next year with those plush Merino seats with the massage and cooling! |
