Don't think there is a different supplier, my understanding is that Magna has the contract for virtually all of the vehicles coming out of the SC plant.
I took delivery yesterday and yes, my rear seat is wrinkled. I was prepared but my better half was a bit bummed. I told her that it is an issue common to virtually all of the X5s. We accepted the car but express our disappointment to the CA and Sales Manager. They acknowledged it is an issue they have been unable to resolve with BMWNA. Life goes on.

My sales guy has acknowledged they are hearing about the seats. I looked at a 50i today and the wrinkles were pretty bad, I could hold the leather between my fingers. Sad because the leather itself is beautiful and soft.

Look closer. You can still see some wrinkles on those 2nd row bucket seats. Some are subtle but present.

The seats are wrinkly because BMW went with the cheapest option which was Magna. Wrinkly seats is just one of the many problems with Magna.
BMW is well aware of the issue and has been since the very beginning. The inspectors noticed it instantly since on the F15/F16 if the seats were wrinkled and they didn't document it then they would get in trouble. The inspectors were told to let it go because BMW honestly doesn't care about quality right now. They've set production numbers so high that they only care about getting the cars out the door. You're lucky it even had seats installed. The excuse they give for letting the seats go like that is that they will tighten up in the sun and heat. |

I would take it. Those look similar to others I have seen. Only option would be a non-X5. I don’t see BMW fixing this for a long time if ever. I get it is tough to accept in a 70K+ car.

Here's the dilemna, we're getting a damn good deal which is gonna be hard to match. After a $19,000 trade the out the door bottom line is $44,538 for a 40i, merino luxury seats, convenience package, tow, etc.
I may try to steam out the wrinkles. Need to talk to a car upholstery shop first. |

They darn well better fix it. This is the thing that people notice, and it will cost them sales. My guess is that we see gradual improvement until the issue is fixed, without any admission that the first batches had anything wrong, or maybe they'll fix it at the model year changeover. Then they can say "we changed the seat design for 2020." I think 2019 owners are definitely hosed, though.

Apparently all comes down to vendor switch couple years ago. So BMW decided to squeeze a few bucks out of the sewing process, and we're now seeing the results. Very often...you get what you pay for. I spent my career as international buyer with approx $370 million annual volume. What I learned is you negotiate a fair, reasonable price from the best quality vendors. Attempting to achieve better quality results from a subpar manufacturer is rarely successful. Magna was less expensive for a reason. I have rarely seen such inconsistent sewing quality in any vehicle, much less a "premium German brand". Porsche/Audi/MB/Volvo/RR/etc. would never accept this.

It is so frustrating to see this from BMW! Especially when they made new X5 cabin much nicer but dropped the ball on upholstery. Back in the day I had 2008 528xi and I remember it also had some wrinkles in front and rear seats but nowhere near as inconsistent as X5s
