Battery 12v?
My 2020 X5 3.0Diesel Msport non hybrid, does it have a 48v battery at all? I thought it only has the norm 12v system, one battery in the rear. There is nothing in th spare wheel well.
BMW dealership tell me it has, but I think they're wrong. |

48V is mild hybrid, mine is 48v and the second battery doesn't propel the car but on the registration document it states: Type of fuel HYBRID ELEC it doesn't mention petrol even though it is a V8. The taxation class on the document is:ALTERNATIVE FUEL CAR.

For an independent check, you can put your VIN in at mdecoder.com or other VIN decoder and check the build options. If it lists option 1CE 48V MILD HYBRID SYSTEM or (S1CE Recuperation System), then you have it.

Annoying, I've asked BMW to replace the battery (12v one in boot) under warranty as it constantly drops to 12.1 volts after a few days parked up. They said it's a 48v system and too dear to replace the battery!! I didn't buy a warrantied car to be told that part is too dear for us to replace, especially as it doesn't exist (48V Battery)! |

2. If your 12V battery is at 12.1V after a few days I don't think that is sufficient reason to replace it. Does the car still start and run OK? A load test is needed to determine if replacement is necessary. |

Aside from that, if your battery is dropping to 12.1 V after a few days of being parked, one of two things is happening. 1. The battery isn't holding a charge, or 2. You have a parasitic load that's draining the battery - something in the car isn't completely turning off and continues to draw current. Any service department should be able to address this. Item 1. can be verified or dismissed with a battery tester that tests it under load. Every dealer I've ever been to has a battery tester. It takes 5 minutes. If the battery checks out OK, it will take some detective work to find the problem causing 2. If this is the problem, you'll want to fix it because it won't just go away and a new battery won't solve the problem. The issue is it takes time, effort, and a skill technician to solve. Good luck. I don't know if BMW UK corporate office has a customer service number. If they do, you may need to use it to see if they can put some pressure on the dealer to resolve the issue.

When car bat has been fully charged (on a charger)the auto start stop works fine, a day later and it doesn't due to low voltage, this is how I noticed the fault. (Start stop has got one use ) Cars in with the dealer ATM as i'm away for 2 weeks on holiday so they can monitor it and see what's going on for the 2 weeks. They're also fitting a new seal to the sunroof. |
