Repairing Crack in Acoustic Window
I just bought a pristine, very low mile certified 2020 X5 (so excited!) and had it shipped 500 miles to my home.
When it arrived, we noticed a hairline crack in the front driver window, presumably from some debris on the ride up. I called my local BMW dealer and was quoted $560 for the glass and $500-$600 for labor (about $1,100 total plus tax). Since I will probably need to pay out of pocket, I checked with Safelite, and their website was quoting $489 for the installation of "Solar, Driver side, Front, soundproofing" glass. Obviously, it's a big price difference for a front drivers window. Does safelite install the same BMW acoustic window as the dealer? Are there other issues (eg, technology that could be affected like parking assist?) or complications from poor installation? Or, is this a pretty standard installation? Any advice would be greatly appreciated since we are so excited to have our new X5. |

If you have HUD don’t go with anything other than OEM as it will haze on non-OEM. Don’t believe anyone who says otherwise. I’ve seen it so many times.

And don't forget all the sensors and cameras that need to be calibrated after changing the windshield. There is a post about this subject here (somewhere)

Curious why the dealer wouldn't share some responsibility here or the transport company. What if the car had arrived with dents? Surely you wouldn't be paying out if pocket for that?
And as others have stated, use OEM glass. Don't compromise

The parking sensors are in the bumper so no issues there. |

If you don't have insurance, then you will be responsible to work with safelite to get OEM glass, if that's what you want, again use the etching info on your window and whichever way you end up going, when you go to safelite for your appt, make sure to match up the etching on your cars window to the one they will be installing. Once the job is done, carefully inspect your cars interior for damage and/or grease and be sure to activate your window up and down a few times, trying the quick touch and hold down method to be sure everything is working as it should. Once you leave, its your word vs theirs. |
